One track/diploma is for students who want to enter into the trades, another is for college-bound students, and another is a general diploma. Students know if they enjoy reading/studying for theoretical and academic areas versus working with their hands rather early on. The US loves to reinvent the wheel. We are one of the few nations that don't offer different tracks for students. It is absolute insanity to believe that all kids want/need the same style/type of education. The fact that all kids are put into the same schools with the same requirements from 7th/8th grade on is very expensive and is why our K-12 is more expensive than in other nations. One of the reasons I became an educator and one of the reasons I STAY an educator is because of this perk. Having time to travel and visit my wife's family internationally is important to me and I use summers for that. 

That being said, 4 day school weeks would be great, I feel. The American public education system has been sold to for-profit testing companies by out of touch politicians who are not equipped or experienced to provide any insight on what our students are truly going to face when they enter the workforce. Getting rid of SB 191 is just the tip of the iceberg. Extending the school day or year is just a band-aid. The whole antiquated system needs an overhaul. Our kids aren't going into manufacturing jobs anymore. They have all the information they possibly could need at their fingertips. Lower income students tend to have far more summer 'learning loss' than students in wealthier zip codes because the latter often grows up with books in the home and may have better support systems in place within the family unit. Year round typically does not mean there are no breaks. Often times they have a fall break, a winter break, a spring break, go until the end of June. Summer break is usually 6 weeks. I also want to piggy back off of another post about other countries having different diplomas. New York does have two different diplomas for their students, a general one and the Regents diploma. I have always thought this was a good idea. Not all students are going in the same direction but we still want to cookie cutter them into one track.
