Winston Smith in Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' is represented as articulate, intelligent and brave. Winston's articulate nature is revealed through his awareness of Big Brother's use of force and repression as a means to consolidate control over the populace; while his bravery is shown through his genuine desire to achieve change through rebelling from the dictatorial regime in England.Whereas, Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis' conveys the protagonist Freder (son of Frederson, the ruling capitalist leader) as courageous, curious, as well as inspirational. These characteristics are evident through Freder's self-realization of the social disparities between the ruling and working classes within the city.

Question 2:

Quotation 1- 'The thing that he was about to do was to open a diary...to mark the paper was the decisive act' (Orwell, 1984, p.9).

The opening of a personal diary conveys Winston's intellectual nature, as well as bravery as he recognizes the ramifications which could ensue if he was caught by the party state. The reference to marking the paper being 'the decisive act' infers that Winston Smith plays a critical role within the novel, by seeking to rebel against the party machine-refusing to submit to the repressive nature of the regime.

Quotation 2- 'Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If it is granted, all else follows' (Orwell, 1984, p.93).

The repetition of 'freedom' reiterates the characteristics of bravery and intelligence through revealing his innate ability to distance himself from the regime and reaffirm his independence and sense of freedom. It further shows his significance in the novel as it symbolizes Orwell's key concern about the need for heroic individuals who are willing to achieve profound change for the greater good of humanity.

Question 3:

Scene 1: Garden of Eden scene

The eternal garden scene where Maria and the children visit the elite class's area of living highlights Freder's curiosity as a character, as it his observation of Maria which encourages him to broaden his understanding of the lower class conditions within the factories.

Scene 2: Final scene of 'Metropolis'

The concluding scene involving Freder encouraging Grot and Frederson to unite and, shake hands alludes to his influential character in acting as a mediator between the ruling and working class. Hence, Freder acts, in this scene as a manifestation of the hope for Weimar Germany and the future prospects of workers situated in an industrialized world.
