To have good professional development it needs to be concise, data-driven, and goal oriented. Using the five step model helps structure our PLCs to achieve this. As I used the five step model to help plan a training in Activity 4, it really helped me target the main reason for the training and ways to be successful in that goal. My school's main focus right now is creating specific and obtainable goals so that we can move forward and grow. Even small steps are steps!

The five steps support collective efficacy because they give teachers a shared process to learn, try, and reflect together. Starting with a real student need and using real student data/student work helps everyone stay focused on the same goal. Learning and applying strategies together builds confidence, and seeing the impact on students reinforces the belief that what we are doing does work.

The Five Steps gives you an easy broken down way to work through the need so that we can have higher student success. Start with a small need first and that will help you get through the more challenging ones!

Teachers want to be doing something that is relevant and doable during PLC's. A PLC agenda set up with the Five Steps for Effective Learning protocol helps to make sure this is happening. The focus stays on student learning and what teachers can do to ensure they are all learning. I also like how the 5 steps are always ongoing and cause us to reflect on our teaching practices.

By following the 5 steps, there is created a clear pathway to improvement for all teachers and students. All stakeholders are empowered to develop and be supported as they learn. The steps should be cyclical in nature as to continue to learning in a clear manner. It is predictable and non threatening. It also lets everyone know that you don't have to fix all problems or meet all needs at the same time. This structure helps keep issues in a doable mindset and should not become overwhelming.

Kristin Ashli Smiley

When teachers are provided with structure, routine, high growth, and deep conversations by their leadership, this facilitates a positive relationship which contributes to confidence in their teaching practice. In turn, students will also have structure, routines, high growth, and deep conversations inside their classrooms which will facilitate a positive learning impact and student growth, which will boost their confidence. Lead teachers and teachers will be focused on relevant needs and have evidence of positive student achievement. This means students and teachers will continuously be receiving the support they need in a timely manner and their learning will reflect that. Teachers will receive support and coaching before, during, and after learning, which means that students and teachers will day to day benefit more and more from the improved practice and modeling of strategies. All of these align with the characteristics of effective professional development.

Question: I have the same concerns as many others have stated. I teach in the middle school and the students have no motivation to do well. When I try to use chromebooks with them, they use google lens or other AI platforms to get their answers. I tell them that they won't have access to that when I give them a test, but they still continue to "cheat". This is my first year to teach Algebra I and I had to fail a student for the first semester who had a 43 average. On the ATLAS summative assessments he scores a 3 consistantly. The other students know that failure is not an option when you're taking a class for a high school credit. I gave a quiz Friday and I might of had 2 or 3 students who barely passed it out of the remaining 12 in the class. I also teach after school 2 days a week and they know I am there if they'd just stay for extra help. This is causing me to lose sleep!!! Any advice will be appreciated.

The 5 step of effective learning protocol connects closely with strong professional development because each supports and strengthens the other. Both are grounded in meeting the needs of teachers and studnets and focus on achieving meaningful academic growth by analyzing student data. Effective professional development should include collaboration and meaningful opportunities to build skills that directly apply to the classroom. Through ongoing implementation and reflection as outlined int he protocol, professional learning should remain continuous and flexable to meet evolving needs.

Teacher confidence grows as they understand the process and the power behind aligning the goals and what we are trying to accomplish in the classroom. There is direct alignment in the understanding, common language, preparation and execution of the steps. The entire five step process aligns and provides a simplistic template that will allow teachers to take ownership as they are working. collaboratively.
