1. What was something new or thought about in a different way that you learned this week and why?

Something that I learned about this week was in ROTC when we talked about how leaders operate in leadership styles. I had not given much thought to this as I figured that people all lead in the same way. However everyone has their own style. My style is more of a laid back leader who gives people a lot of freedom in their tasks, but when I review them, the tasks will be up to snuff or else I will micromanage every step of their process until I can trust them to execute properly again.

2.Based on best practices, how can you apply what you know in your career choice as a Health Promotion Manager?

In health promotion we have lots of studies of brand new techniques and theories that may help promote or reduce... whatever it is. Our job is to evaluate the strength of these claims and apply them to our clients, programs, and communities to help people in the most efficient and effective way.

3.What do you want to learn more about, and why?

I would love to learn about why health promotion is virtually non existent in the military. Especially at the lower levels of the enlisted side. When I was a private at basic combat training, I had one hour long block of instruction on resilience training. I have also noticed that being in the military there are large amounts of people are tobacco users, heavy drinkers, and high stress in many jobs.

1. What made you curious this week?
This week my curiosity was sparked when I saw a biography on the great Carthaginian General Hannibal. Hannibal is one of my favorite history lessons because he represents to me that you can do anything (even take an empire to it's knees), if you set your mind to it. Hannibal once said "If I can not find a way, I will make one". I really like that mindset and outlook on life.

2. What about your thinking, learning, or work this week brought you the most satisfaction? Why?

The thing that brought me the most satisfaction this week was volunteering with my roommate Madeline to help out with the special needs cheerleading team. The kids were awesome!

3. How did you help the class learn this week? If you feel you didn't add to class or feel the need to contribute more consider what can you do next week to help other learners more?

I felt that I helped the class learn on Monday by explaining the section on a military squad and put that level of connection into a civilian point of view.

1. How can you interpret the information presented so far in the Influencer book to reflect on this statement? What principles help you agree or disagree with the statement?

I feel that the statement is completely accurate. To influence someone's actions they need to buy into what you are trying to tell them first. Influencers concentrate on behaviors which in the end is what we need to change and this is the vital behavior principal that think is the most important.

2. What is your vision of wellness using the principals promoted in Workplace Wellness that Works book? Use Putnam's to imagine what is possible to create an innovative wellness program.

My vision of wellness is concentrate on the principle of empowering employees to make healthier choices through the power of suggestion and influence. Offering healthy choices primarily over unhealthy ones, having mental health professionals available to your employees, having flex time built into your scheduling, having a gym membership included, having discounted health insurance if you go to the company gym a certain number of hours a week, month, or year, and having a meditation room as well. Changing a workplace environment can change the morale of workers significantly; when morale changes for the better workers are more productive, resulting in less absenteeism.

To influence this change we can add autonomy to the programs the classes are running by letting the children choose the activities they want to do, and to shift focus from a sports base curriculum to a physical activity based curriculum.

In the Putnam book, we talked about Da Vinci Teams and to develop these courses we utilize this concept in our own group. Nou will be our technology consultant, Abby will be the Public Health Consultant, I will be the Exercise Physiology consultant to the project and Mike will be the course designer.

As you listened to the Genius Hour Presentations about the driving questions, consider your groups' focus and how on track you feel you are in moving forward to develop your project/product. As a way to revisit where you started in your mind-map, ask and answer these two questions about your project:

Why do I/we want to be an Influencer?” and “Who do I/we want to influence?

How can we alter gym class to incorporate a life long adherence to exercising?

I feel like our group is right on track with our genius hour driving question as we had a topic many people related with and it is dealing with a problem 70 percent of Americans seem to struggle with which is getting enough physical activity and adhering to that lifestyle. I want to influence this lifestyle of being active in everyone around me by being the example and a role model to others. I want to do this because everyone deserves the right to see what a truly healthy life feels like.

I think that to create meaning in our own genius hour we have to get the kids in our classes to have fun with the classes and to get involved with their friends to get active.

1. Focus and Measure - reflect on this concept and think about what you are really wanting to change and how would you measure that change and show success?

We need a new way to get honest and unbiased feedback from the children in our genius hour. Instead of a paper assessment we are thinking of doing a doodle poll.

2. Find Vital Behaviors - reflect and select the one or two vital behaviors that are really driving the problem you are addressing. What are the MOST IMPORTANT one(s) to address?

Our most important vital behavior is the continuation of exercise after the class is done. To influence this we are creating a workbook/information packet about the benefits of work outs and giving them example workouts to keep them doing physical activity after the class is over.

3. Engage all Six Sources of Influence - reflect on the six sources of influence and think about your strategy and methods. How would you plan to diffuse these into your project so you actually make a difference?

I think the most important source of influence for our genius hour is personal motivation and I think that to instill this, we have to make the most effective program we can so they are inspired and enjoy to work out every day.

His success story of an immigrant come to America finding success in first bodybuilding, films, and ultimately striving to get to the highest position a non-native born American can reach- Governor. His biggest asset was that he had personal motivation. He was always self driven in bodybuilding, finding new parts of movies, and in his political career. He always had a very clear vision of where he wanted to go and how to get there.
