"“The devil is waiting for them, hell is gaping for them, the flames gather and flash about them,"

"Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downward with great weight and pressure towards hell;"

When Edwards says it is "gaping for them, he is trying to say that hell is welcoming them. They have acted so bad that heaven has shut the gates on them, and hell's gates have opened.
Edwards us trying to say that, with all the bad that you do in the world is going to cause you to sink down and down until you arrive to hell. Heavy as lead is a term he uses as if you were lead sinking or falling. This relates to the theme because if you're "wicked" then you don't go up to heaven but down to hell.

-Charles

“But here you are in the land of the living and in the house of God, and have an opportunity to obtain salvation”

“...a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open…”

The first quote is a major change of tone and mood in the sermon- Edwards goes from describing the eternal damnation one will face in hell, to introducing a way to turn your life around through salvation. The second quote shows a once in a lifetime opportunity, where God is allowing you to be saved by him forever, and avoid the wrath of hell.

-Adam

¨It is doubtless the case of some whom you have seen and known that never deserved hell more than you... But here you are in the land of the living and in the house of God, and have the opportunity to obtain salvation.¨
¨ a day wherein Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open, and stands in calling and crying with a loud voice to sinners; a day wherein many are flocking to him, and pressing into the kingdom of God.¨
In the first quote it says ¨you are in the land of the living and in the house of God, and have the opportunity to obtain salvation.¨ basically no matter what you are living under God and have the opportunity to be saved or born again. The next quote is explaining a day where Christ has thrown the door of mercy wide open and is calling the sinners to be born again and start fresh.
-Isabel Cutler
