         <description><![CDATA[<div>_Challenges: Student resistance; contested facts/nature of truth; assigning labels or stereotypes to people with whom we disagree<br>_Opportunities: Speaking from experience; listening empathetically; recognizing that learning often happens when we feel uncomfortable<br>_Strategies: playing devil's advocate; challenging assumptions; using rubrics/checklists; peer review; setting and agreeing on ground rules; re-stating goals or ground-rules when conversation gets heated; talking 1:1 with students before or after class; reflecting and expressing intent vs harm, using devices for learning students names (name cards); using strategies for calling on students (names on sticks) and getting students to know one another's names (calling one another by name in order to "pass" on being called on); using icebreakers such as describing the story of one's name &amp; introducing one's partner to the class based on stories;  using cards and symbols collected at end of class for students to signal what questions they have, what points they understand, &amp; what piqued their interest</div>]]></description>
