Saint Cecilia was a Roman saint and martyr. It is believed that she was born in Rome, into an important family, and that she was married against her will with a young pagan named Valerius. Cecilia managed to get her husband to respect her virginity and convert to Christianity. Her husband was beheaded along with his brother for burying the martyrs of the persecution of Turco Almaquio. Cecilia was also denounced and sentenced to be thrown into the fire of the baths in her own house, but she came out unharmed. Turco Almaquio then ordered that she was beheaded; Cecilia, wounded three times with the axe, died after three days of suffering. Pope Urbano buried the martyr Cecilia and consecrated her house as a basilica. Saint Cecilia is considered an example of a Christian woman.

The records of the martyrdom, drawn up in the 5th century, literally say that: “The day appointed for the wedding arrived. The musical instruments sounded but she only sang in her heart to God saying: Keep my heart and my body immaculate, and do not shame me; and after fasting and praying two or three days, he commended his fear to God. However, an erroneous reading caused a different version to be implicitly transmitted: “Playing instruments, Cecilia sang to God saying: Keep my heart immaculate and don't let me be ashamed.” The confusion was accentuated when the saint began to be represented singing and playing an instrument, ecstatic and looking at the sky.
