How would you describe the structure of the speech? How does she use this structure to assert her claim? What other devices, elements, and tools does she use? How do these help to develop her claim? by gretchengriffith

The structure of Baker's speech is mostly optimism and equality. She wanted to inform and persuade the ones who suffered the way she did when she was a child by using real-life examples and how she overcame obstacles. Basically, she is saying the more optimistic one is, the better life they will have. This helps her develop her claim because she is persuading the audience to do similar things that she did, but not to run away. Also, she is very understanding about the children in America and what they went through.

As far as structure, her speech follows a chronological account of her life going from St. Louis to Paris, and then coming back to America. She gives her own personal experiences, but doesn’t give minute details. She expects the audience to infer what she means.
She also uses metaphors, one example being the one at the end "---but friends, the pen really is mightier than the sword."
Thirdly, she uses the terms "brothers, sisters, friends, and family" throughout her speech. It gives a sense of family/kinship (utilizes pathos).

In Baker's speech, she structures the speech by putting specific details of segregation in her life in order. She starts by saying how she ran away to France because her living situation in the United States was very bad. Also, towards the end of her speech it becomes very current and shows how now she has been invited to the White House by the president. She also styles her speech by providing multiple real examples from her life which shows the audience how she had many obstacles and how bad her living situation was. For example she said how in the united States people would yell at her and she would have to do different things then other however, in France she was not discriminated, she was accepted.

The structure of the speech has various specific details from her life. In the speech she uses lots of repetition with the words "friends" and "family". That shows that she sees everyone as equal. That helps to develop her claim because her speech talks about how she was treated well in France but as soon as she got on a ship to America she was back to being treated differently and she didn't like that.

The structure of her speech starts out with her describing parts of her life and how she has experienced injustice then describes her great experience in the more equal France, ending with a call to action to all the supporters of the movement. She uses this to state her legitimacy on what she is saying, Show they can make a difference like in France and then give a call to action to make that difference.
