Are cultural boycotts constructive?

Overall, cultural boycotts are not as constructive. Firstly, they affect the people rather than the government because citizens do not show their opposition if their culture is banned, what happens is that they leave the country and try to prove their position abroad. Therefore, boycotts have the opposite effect since people will stay silent even longer. On the other hand, cultural boycotts can appear to be the only option the international arena can apply. Moreover, this action will create economic pressure upon Russia, and alleviate its expenditure on military as well as other fields.

To conclude, we believe that cultural boycotts are not constructive. Even though it may put pressure on Russia, we believe that it affects the people in the country more.

In terms of Russia and Ukraine, cultural boycotts can be unconstructive. First of all, the Russian population living in Ukraine, stands against the invasion and the cultural boycott may cause feeling of exclusion and unfair blame for the war which they dont support and did not cause. Boycotting of Russian artists’ works and exhibitions, this can lead to a message of a deny to violence and wars. At the same time, it contributes to misunderstand the Russians, who do not want wars. Furthermore, many russian artists speak out against war using their art to advocate for peace. It is will be short-sighted and cowardly to exclude those people only based on nationality. Cultural boycotts can promote xenophobia (more specifically Russophobia) in the long run and cause problems for the russians who stand against the war. Ukrainian and Russian culture remains close historically

and these boycotts can result in 'burning of (future) bridges' and hinder the process of reconciliation. Hence, we believe that cultural boycotts are unconstructive and are more harmful for common people (who stand against the war) than the actual decision makers.

Art is a great way to depict a moment in history frozen in time, just like a photo. It serves as a visual means to represent the past in a socially conscious way. Art allows new generations to understand the past in a digestible and easily communicated manner. However, art is always subjective and may leave room for misinterpretation. Art may not necessarily encapsulate whole contexts and representation may be a double-edged sword. Hence, although art can be used as a starting point for deeper explorations into history, its very nature may leave gaps in knowledge and shouldn’t solely be used in this process.

It is agreeable that cultural boycotts are constructive if implemented effectively. This is mainly because communities, sometimes even international, can come together to disapprove of actions taken by a political leader or an aggressive country. This puts the perpetrator under pressure to comply or withdraw from violent activities. For instance, a country like Russia that is globally known for its cultural pride can be negatively affected by being banned from participating in an international cultural activity. Moreover, the isolation of the country in question can promote national discomfort among citizens who feel the negative impacts of their country’s sanctions, to force the govt to comply even more to the international community requirements. One interesting thing is the country cannot use its soft power anymore.

There are positive and negative impacts on the used of sports/art/culture to remember the past. The positive part is that it can be a memorial to honouring the history and keep it alive. It could foster understanding, values, respects between community. It remind people of the sacrifices made in wars and brought many people together. For example, during the Paris Olympic when Algerians athletes brought red roses and threw it on the Seine River to remember the past history happened. Despite the positive impacts, there are also several negative parts of the politic and sport overlaps. The concrete example of this situation is how certain athletes are not allowed to bring their country's name when they lost but are allowed when they won.

In the light of the controversies with the 2022 Qatar World Cup, it is apparent that sports and politics are inevitably interlinked. From their dubious bidding practices, to their human rights violations, many internal and external politics were at play. Such sporting events were used as instruments of influence to gain soft power. This form of propaganda can be referred to as an example of sportswashing. Today's sporting events have grown to be such a powerful medium to influence the perception of their image, that it would be detrimental to not take advantage of it. Thus concluding that sporting events and politics are intrinsically linked, and in the modern day, cannot be seperated from one another.

We believe that a complete banning of Russian culture and art is an irresponsible action. We understand there are various risks involved in allowing free access to Russia media since art is a powerful propaganda tool as well as a representation of culture. Indiscriminately banning Russia art is inconsiderate of the individual artists and athletes who aren't necessarily supportive of the Russian Government. In our modern time with mass media and resources of past events such as debates relating to Shostakovich's works - is he a Soviet Union's symbol or a discreet opposer - we have a golden opportunities to study art with a neutral and analytical perspective, equipping ourselves with essential and impartial opinions. Boycotting and isolation will only push people further into the government's sphere.

Innovative but Misinterpreted Art

History has always been connected to humanity since the dawn of time with art as a medium of preservation. Art can help in remembering history by visualizing the past in a way that cannot be done with words. Innovating art also allows for new interpretations of history and the meanings of the things that has happened in the past to be interpreted in new ways. However, that does not mean art in history is entirely positive. Everyone is different and how they interpret a piece of work may be different and often times controversial. For example, in the Paris Olympics, there was a piece of art that tried to innovate the Christian story of "the last supper" which lacked religious sensitivity to the point of oversensitivity as they showed it in a way that was too bombastic and flashy. Additionally, the use of poppies in the EPL, although it meant good, some like James McClean and Phineas Harper felt excluded as the poppies did not consider the trauma and the devastation that people who were not British also experienced during the conflicts.
