The Louisiana Purchase was the acquisition of the territory of Louisiana by the United States from Napoleonic France in 1803. In return for fifteen million dollars, or approximately eighteen dollars per square mile, the United States nominally acquired a total of 828,000 square miles. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of America, it made westward expansion and manifest destiny take off from what it originally was. The purchase shaped Americans dreams of moving wet and pursuing what they wanted to do since there would be more job openings
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Purchase

The Northerners and Southerners were not happy with either decision because they had both imagined a different America.

The Compromise of 1850 consists of five laws passed in September of 1850 that dealt with the issue of slavery and territorial expansion. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished. Furthermore, California entered the Union as a free state and a territorial government was created in Utah. In addition, an act was passed settling a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico that also established a territorial government in New Mexico. The Fugitive Slave Act was the most controversial. It required citizens to assist in the recovery of fugitive slaves. It denied a fugitive's right to a jury trial, making people fighting for slavery rebell.

They ultimately agreed that the United States would potentially cease importation of slaves in 1808. An act of Congress passed in 1800 made it illegal for Americans to engage in the slave trade between nations, and gave U.S. authorities the right to seize slave ships which were caught transporting slaves and confiscate their cargo. Factories and mass production increasingly displaced independent artisans.
