Many people are killed in avalanches in the Alps every year.

In order to stay safe we often rely on information gained from avalanche bulletins and applications such as White Risk.

How do we know that this information is reliable?

Why are we willing to trust this information when the consequences of it not being correct are so high?

Should we question more carefully the definitions of some of the terms used?

Should we ski outside of resort at all?

Activity:

Students could come up with their own danger scale and definitions. Should this be based on experience or research?

Students must justify why they should be allowed to go powder skiing.

Make a flawed statement and carry out an investigation to 'prove' it. Get the pupils to explain why it does not make it true.
Eg: Plasticene is les dense than water. Float a plasticine boat on water. Get them to prove the plasticine  is more dense.
