Recall the marker ~만 (only), which you learned about in an earlier chapter. It can be attached to a noun or phrase. 
For example:

We can replace ~만 in these two sentences with ~밖에, without affecting the meaning at all.

Note, however, that ~밖에 is always followed by a negative verb. This is because 밖에 means outside, and 저는 테니스밖에 안 칩니다 literally means I don’t play (any sports) outside tennis.

Noun (number, counter)+밖에+negative form of verb (없다, 모르다, 안+verb , 못+ verb, etc.)
is used to express that there is something less than desired.  This can be translated as “nothing but…” “none other than….” “not any more than ….”or “only …” in English.  Remember 밖에 is always used with negative form of a verb; --밖에 + NEG forms of verbs, as opposed to --만(=only),  focuses on what “lacks” by using negation.

 

•       오늘 아침에는 우유밖에 안 마셨어요. 

•       저는 팔 굽혀 펴기는 5번밖에 못해요. 

•       저는 딸 하나 밖에 없어요. 

•       저는 양말이 두 켤레 밖에 없습니다. 

•       저는 군복이 한 벌 밖에 없습니다. 

•       어제 밥을 한 끼  밖에 못 먹었습니다. 

Note: 
아니다, the negative form for –이다, is NOT used with 밖에.        

저는 학생 밖에 아닙니다.  (X)

왔어요. 그리고, 디즈니랜드, 할리우드와 코리아타운에도 한 번밖에

못 갔어요. 시간이 없어서 사진도 조금밖에 못 찍었어요.

여러분도 한번 밖에 못 가본 곳이 있습니까?
