1) Funding - schools are not availing of the many wonderful Discovery Centres because of the many costs already inflicted on students and parents by our "Free Education" system - subsidise workshops, subsidise travel costs - make how many can you take and how cheaply can you do it not the priority but how can you make STEM ( or preferably STEAM ) more interesting and exciting for our pupils the priority on teachers minds.

2) Field trips should be on the primary and post-primary curriculum and long term projects with Discovery Centres, Universities and Private Industries to show students and pupils how fun activities cover the curriculum and how it is all connected rather than standing on their own as just subjects to learn because they have to - show them how STEAM is part of everyday life. - maybe revise the books ...

1) Inclusion / promotion of site visits (local or further afield) to explore the practical applications of what they are learning, and to meet people in STEM related careers. Not just for Green flags etc. but as an example of what they have been learning about in the class. Doesn't even have to be in person anymore - can be virtually, and this could increase the amount of times/people they meet. A list of people/places etc. that could offer this would be super (Something like the lists from Women in Stem Ireland).

2) Promotion / creation of resources that help them Teachers to link together and cover a number of LO or curriculum points within one activity or theme (i.e. Growing and cooking food with a link to sustainability would help students visit a number of LOs at JC level across STEM subjects and non-stem subjects in a few classes, rather than tackling them with individual experiments).

1) Develop a highly visible tangible link between the Dept. and Discover Centres, the network of teacher education centres would be an example. The education system seems to respond much better to peer to peer recommendations or endorsement. As these centres have already gone though an accreditation process and operate as businesses in their own right it would not be too much of a leap for Dept. of Education to promote STEM providers to schools.

2) There is a wealth of knowledge and expertise within the DPSM network. This skillset may at times go unnoticed as it operates outside the "formal" education system. An idea would be to highlight STEM providers in a similar format used by Heritage in Schools or Artists in Schools. Other models such as sports coaches and music teachers are also imported by schools, why not position STEM and one of these areas where outside providers may be engaged by primary schools.
