I am not completely versed in the Reader's and Writer's Workshop yet, but I am confident that this (or at least parts of it) could be integrated into it. Essentially it stands for Vocabulary, Connectives/Conjunctions, Openers and Punctuation. It is a working wall display that I use either collaboratively or as a success criteria for things I am looking to see in their writing. The Big write may not work as well as it seems to be the antithesis of what my current understanding of how the Workshop goes, but essentially the final writing day for the students is a big deal and they can bring in inspirational costumes, outfits, characters etc.

Basically, I keep a bunch of 3x5 speech cards that are different colours on hand. Whenever we go over new vocabulary, I write it down and add it to the wall under the correct heading (Verb, Adjective, Adverb etc.). I usually assign an action to it as well to help them remember. Eventually, I (or my TA) print out a picture to go along with the word to help them remember and we connect any words that could be used similarly with string.

I don't always love it and I find it works best for students who really struggle with language. I do feel that elements of it could be used to supplement and support the awesomeness that is already happening at CIPLC.

How to master it? We discussed flashcards, making them required, and the virtues of handwriting them. E-flashcards, like on studyblue.com, are cool if done right, but are too easy to "cheat" - copy/paste or even "share" with someone else. Also some good ideas for what to put on the flashcards (in own words, drawings) to establish student ownership over the word.

I have implemented a variety of GLAD strategies in my classroom and found them to be highly successful for all students, but especially ELLs. This has been, by far, the best professional development that I have ever had. I have a huge binder of strategies and resources that I will be bringing as well as access to online unit plans.
