To achieve the school’s vision of producing confident communicators in the Mother Tongue Language (ML) with 21st-century skills, students must build their vocabulary and knowledge especially nouns, verbs, and question words. Due to reliance on English words, the students’ fluency in Malay language declined. A structured vocabulary exposure, explicit questioning techniques, and differentiated instruction with scaffolding are essential to support diverse student needs. Hence, Malay storybooks are used to enhance students’ vocabulary and understanding of the Malay language. This ultimately prepares the students for their alternative assessment (book sharing) which assess their language use and understanding.

The 2024 Primary School Malay Language Curriculum Model aims to develop students who are active and proficient in using the language confidently through enjoyable learning experiences. Joy in learning can enhance student engagement in the learning process. By providing contexts and daily experiences that are relevant to the lesson content, students’ language skills and knowledge can be enriched.

Students learn best when they have fun. I have been using Kahoot not just as quiz but as a platform for students to enjoy learning idioms. I can share the already made questions for teachers to straight away use with their class.

Other than the classic mode, students really enjoy learning using the Robot Run mode, Tallest Tower and Team Mode.

My sharing will be hands-on playing for teachers to try and see how fun it is!

At GESPS, we aim to provide a Mother Tongue Language (MTL) experience that is engaging, purposeful, and aligned with students’ learning needs. In line with MOE’s direction, our focus is on helping students become confident and effective users of their mother tongue. This sharing will highlight how GESPS supports the development of spoken Tamil skills through the use of interactive and student-friendly activities. By adapting familiar games such as Jenga, Taboo, and our in-house ‘Pop Tales’, we create opportunities for students to practise speaking Tamil in an enjoyable and low-stress environment. These activities encourage active participation, strengthen vocabulary, and help students express themselves more confidently. Through such approaches, we aim to make the learning of Tamil more accessible and enjoyable, while strengthening students’ oral communication skills.

PCPS MTL programmes are developed in line with the department’s mission for our MTL students to acquire the 4 main skills in language – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

In line with our mission, we encourage students to become active and lifelong users of Tamil language. The new MTL syllabus for lower primary allows for more flexibility to inject joyful and meaningful learning. The use of big book to introduce a new unit allows for a seamless flow into the lesson.

For upper primary students, Maanavar Murasu (student newspaper) articles are used in classroom. In groups, students will choose an article, discuss, summarize and share it with classmates. In doing so, they become confident speakers.

Lesson ideas will be shared during this collaboration.

Having clear routines in the classroom helps students feel safe, stay focused, and know what to expect. Routines take the guesswork out of the day, which means students can spend more energy on learning. Research shows that routines support important thinking skills like planning, staying organised, and managing time—even if we’re not teaching those skills directly. I’ve used simple routines like morning check-ins and clear start and end-of-lesson procedures. These help students settle quickly, stay on task, and become more independent. Routines also make it easier for teachers to manage the classroom and spend less time on behaviour. When used well, routines help create a calm, positive learning space where everyone can do their best.

Habits of Mind will enable students to think and behave intelligently especially when they faced challenging questions. Hence, we infused habits of mind in our teaching of comprehension skills. Students are equipped with good learning habits and thinking dispositions using the 3BCS strategy. The application of 3BCS strategy has enabled students to strive for accuracy and precision in the answering of comprehension questions.

This activity is to enhance pupils oracy. In groups of 3 or 4, pupils need to play Snake & Ladder. They will throw the dice and climb. After that, they will need to pick a card from a deck of cards. The cards contain questions they need to answer. They must talk in tamil to answer the questions and their group mates will assess them for a maximum of 5 marks. The other group mates are allowed to help them too. The game goes on till all have reached the top or when the teacher gives a time to end. The first to win will still continue to take a card and talk with his groupmates, till the game ends. There will be three winners. Two in every one, one reaches the top first and one who gets the maximum marks. The third winner will be the pupil who has gotten the highest marks in class, among all groups.

The landscape of teaching and learning affixation is very challenging, especially among students who are weak in reading and speaking skills in the Malay language. Innovative methods such as the Affixation Wheel were created with the hope of helping students produce words with the meN- and peN- prefixes and use them correctly. In addition, the Affixation Wheel (Roda Imbuhan) also aims to help students become more confident in determining the meanings behind these two prefixes. Clearly, many previous studies on language learning using wheels have produced encouraging findings. Therefore, we conducted a field study on two cohorts of Primary 4 students by collecting primary data through pre-tests and post-tests, as well as secondary data through teacher observations.
