In Mexican culture, we have this sweet bread called Rosca de Reyes (King's Wreath) and it has its roots in Catholicism. It marks the start of Epiphany, which is the manifestation of Jesus to the world. This bread is only made for this occasion (January 6th) and inside the bread are these little white baby figurines. When you cut your slice of the bread, if your slice happens to contain a baby, you are in charge of bringing tamales on February 2nd. February 2nd is Dia de la Candelaria which is a religious day of a feast celebrating 40 days after Christmas and the presentation of Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem. (I had to double-check with my mom on this)

This is what we use to flatten out the masa into the tortilla circular shape. They can be big or small, metal or wooden, old or new. When I look at one, it reminds me of home and the memories hit especially harder since I'm not there for most of the time. It reminds me of everyday life, my mom making tortillas for every meal porque no pueden faltar.
