1970’s - 1980’s – Communicative CALL

The late 1970s saw the introduction of the PC. In contrast to the massive mainframe computers, Apple computers were incredibly affordable, and they gained popularity in schools very fast. However, the student-to-computer ratio was much higher than it is today, and students were only allowed to use PCs for extremely short periods of time.

1990’s – Integrative CALL

The advent of CD ROM technology allowed for the creation of multimedia programs that could include text, graphics, animations, movies, and sounds. With the use of hyperlinks, a pupil can traverse a software. With greater freedom to explore and learn based on own needs and interests, the student can take advantage of several forms of input delivery.

2000's - Today

Real-time, long-distance communication is made feasible by the internet. To assist their students, some educators have been able to arrange video conferences with native speakers. Students can quickly exchange text and audio files by using the internet.
