Exposition: Doodle is a unique kid which his brother hated him because of how he was born. The boy's dad and mom are in the story too but not mentioned a lot. The main character is doodle's brother (The speaker).
Setting: The setting is in the Old Women Swamp where doodle learned how to do many things with his brother. Also at the house with his mom and dad for a bit of the story.
Rising Action: Doodle's brother (Speaker) hates doodle and only wants to teach doodle how to walk and other things just because he is ashamed to have him as a brother. While doodle is unable to do those things alone.
Climax: Doodle's brother teaches him how to walk and he only did that because he is ashamed to have doodle as a brother. Their mother and father both hugged doodle for seeing that he can walk only because doodle's brother taught him but what they didn't know was that it was only him feeling ashamed to have him.
Falling Action: The falling action was when doodle and his brother found a scarlet Ibis which is a bird and later, there was a storm and they started running and doodle's brother left him behind because of how he was feeling. The " streak of cruelty within me awakened." (Hurst page#3 Pg.42).
Resolution: Not really a resolution but doodle was "found huddled beneath a red nightshade bush beside the road. He was sitting on the ground, his face buried in his arms, which were resting on drawn-up knees."( Hurst Page:4 Pg:44). Then doodle's brother started crying and h basically got karma for no caring for his brother and something bad happened.

Foreshadowing:1. When Doodle screams "Don't leave me, brother! Don't leave me!" (Hurst pg. 10) And also towards the end Doodle says the same thing and his brother actually leaves him (Hurst pg.41). 2. Also when everyone thought Doodle was gonna die. "Daddy had the carpenter build a little coffin, and when he was three months old, Mama and Daddy named him William Armstrong. Such a name sounds good only on a tombstone."(Hurst pg.3). And "Everybody thought he was going to die." (Hurst pg.2).
Imagery: "At that moment, the bird began to flutter. It tumbled down through the bleeding tree and landed at our feet with a thud. Its graceful neck jerked twice and then straightened out, and the bird was still.." (Hurst pg.33) Also you can imagine "He didn't answer so I gently lifted his head. He toppled backward onto earth. He had been bleeding from the mouth, and his neck and the front of his shirt were stained a brilliant red. (Hurst pg.45)
Symbolism: Using the scarlet Ibis as a symbol for doodles death. "For a long time, it seemed forever, I lay there crying, sheltering my fallen scarlet Ibis." (Hurst pg.46) Also when describing doodle he used "doodlebug" which makes for his name doodle. "When he crawled on the rug, he crawled backward, as if he were in reverse and couldn't change gears. This made him look like a doodlebug, so I began calling him 'doodle'." (Hurst pg.4)
