"Yeah! John is going home!" My sister, Jane, chirped as I edged into the backseat with the help of my parents. Despite her enthusiasm at my discharge from the hospital, I only managed a grunt. I had to be hospitalized for a week as I sprained my leg in a cycling accident. I was in an unpleasant mood. I could only hobble around with my crutches.
As my family piped up while my father drove us home, I stared blankly out the window. why must I be so careless and cause myself to get into hot soup? I thought.
"We are here!" Father's booming announcement voice shook me from building a sandcastle in the air. The sight of aquamarine water and swaying palm trees on the shore greeted me instantaneously when I woke up from my daydream. We were not at home, but instead we were at - the beach!
"Why are we at the beach?" I asked out of curiosity. However, my parents gave me an enigmatic smile as they helped me out of the car even though I kept peppering them with questions.
Without notice, a few familiar faces suddenly jumped out of nowhere with blinding smiles plastered across their faces caused me to stop in my tracks. "Surprise!" they gave a deafening cheer. Oh, it is my classmates! I thought as I squinted my eyes. The sight of tantalising food roasting on the barbecue pit as well as the fizzy drinks and the snacks on a smooth mat made me realise what was going on and I instantly choked up. Tears sprang into my eyes as if a dark cloud over me had been lifted.
"We are sorry you had that accident," Caden, the class monitor, piped up."You must have been very bored in the hospital. Here is to celebrate you finally being discharged!"
Not long after, everyone tucked into the sumptuous food in glee. "Thank you for planning such a lovely surprise!" I exclaimed after we wiped clean all the food.
As the celebration drew to an end, I thanked everyone profusely for their contribution. The entire experience helped me to understand that no matter the circumstances in future, I must always be appreciative as I had a caring group of friends and family.
