In their society they are watched until they're 12, when they reach 12, they receive their jobs. Some of the jobs being a nurse, or a teacher, or a pilot if they fit into certain aspects. Jonas fit into more than one aspect making him the receiver of memories. However, the receiver of memories holds all the history as to what the world used to be.
