Plastics had existed before, but Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic, was invented in 1907, and it started mass production. Plastics are terrible pollution, the only thing that doesn't naturally break down fully, and that was an advantage for some and a disadvantage for consumables and packaging. The moon landing was the culmination of the space race. Russia started making huge leaps, putting the first satellite, animal, and human in space, until the US moved the goalpost to setting foot on the moon. Apollo 11 did that. The Syrian Civil War's worldwide effect was not felt due to violence, but due to the fact it created over one third of the world's refugees.
