Food cultures in Italy and America

As someone of Italian and American heritage, making a blog comparing the two was only natural. However, what was more challenging was to bring an actual comparison of the two culinary traditions that would not just rag on American cookery. It would be very easy to contrast American fast food with Italian home cooking and regional specialties, but I thought it would be more appropriate to compare actual American culinary traditions to their Italian counterparts. To do this I divided each nation into several regions. Italy is naturally divided into three parts: north, central, and south. Each with their own related culinary traditions. For the United States I had to be more picky because of how large the country is compared to Italy. So I covered the most influential culinary regions in the U.S: the northeast, the south, and the west. These are the most distinct and influential traditions which influence all the other regions of the Union, allowing a more direct comparison to the Italian culinary regions.

Cultural assignment over the Modena City Ramblers.

I love many different genres of music. For this cultural assignment I covered the Italian band Modena City Ramblers, in particular their first studio album Riportando tutto a casa. This band is a perfect storm of musical influences. Drawing inspiration from Italian resistance songs from the Second World War, Irish rebel songs and ballads, American and British punk rock; all the while mostly using instruments which have been traditionally available to Italian musicians. The result is a unique sound that can not be replicated and could not have risen anywhere other than Italy. The album can only truly be appreciated if listened to; it delivers hard punches when it needs to, a jovial farewell of a drinking song, and both slow and fast ballads bemoaning leaving Ireland and the death of a popular Italian leftwing politician.

A letter to my grandmother

Since I am going back to Italy for my first Christmas there in fifteen years I thought it would be appropriate to frame a letter to my grandmother for this project. I found the process not so different from writing a letter in English (although I have never actually sent a letter in English), I did however find that my lack of vocabulary in Italian limited my capacity to express myself. That being said it was a good exercise to make me think in a intimate and familial manner, which is crucial in Italian culture, rather than a dry academic piece.

A formal email in Italian

This sternly but respectfully worded email was inspired by many such similar emails I have watched my father write countless times to frustrating coworkers and superiors. I chose this format for the project because it is a practical skill to have to be able to write formal correspondence in another language, even if the contents are brief and the language used not complex. I tried to make an effort to apply the appropriate level of formality to the fictional Signore Ferrarini, while also communicating the urgency of my email and the necessity of a quick response. I found this less difficult to write than a letter in a less formal style.

Italian vs American Westerns

Something I wanted to explore was how American and Italian Western movies handled themselves differently. They are often viewed as subgenres, but in reality they are two separate genres making use of the same setting. In the essay I covered what I feel are the most crucial differences between the two styles of film wholly in Italian. Doing so was very challenging, especially as I tried to frame this as a more academic piece. My limited language skills in Italian forced me to be repetitive in my writing, but I do think I managed to communicate my thesis and argument well enough in spite of that.

A presentation of my hometown

As proud as I am of my Italian heritage, I am equally a good Southerner. And part of that is being proud of my hometown, warts and all. In this presentation I highlighted several local sights such as the statue of Confederate general Joseph Johnston in the cover slide (now removed due to controversy but I felt it was appropriate to present as a part of the legacy of the town), the historic Wink Theatre which has functioned as a center of the community for decades and continues to be used for small screenings and stageplays, several monuments in downtown, and one of the several battlefields in the area. I also highlighted the history of the town, who the city is named after, as well as my highschool’s football program which has produced a couple of NFL players and is serves to bring the community together.
