He was both a great writer and ruler.
He was born in a time of great cycles of famine and plague that wiped out the countryside after Emperor Justinian's reconquest of Italy.
He fought "tirelessly" against the church serving as the secular ambitions of the strongmen and their patronage networks and instead wanted them to act as a check against the military aristocracy.
He saw himself as the "treasurer" who paid the daily expenses of Rome and the "paymaster" of the Lombards (trying to invade Italy), who were only held off by his daily ransom. He twice prevented Rome by being overtaken by the Lombards.
While he wanted to spread christianity, his main goal was stopping Italy and Rome from being overtaken militarily. He did a good job at this.
Several of his writings were extremely popular (Moralia on Job and The Dialogues, among others).
Source: https://www.britannica.com/biography/St-Gregory-the-Great/Writings-and-influence
