The first women to be accused went by the name of Bridget Bishop, and was hung later that June. Though the Massachusetts General Court later annulled guilty verdicts against accused witches and granted protection to their families. Although, the idea was already widespread in colonial New England at the time. The fear of witchcraft caused a widespread hysteria that caused then colonists to accuse a lot of men, women, and children of witchcraft. The Salem witch trials are very similar to Bacon’s rebellion. Bacons rebellion was an armed rebellion formed by Virginia settlers. During this time everyone was protesting and acting very violent towards each other. The settlers were burning innocent people, as well as the people being accused of being a “witch”, who would die from being hung in a Forest. The Puritan religion started to leave the New England area after many people started adopting the Protestant religion. The rise in Protestant interest began with ideas from the Glorious Revolution moving to New England.
