The Salem Witch Trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village Massachusetts claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft. The first women to be accused went by the name of Bridget Bishop, and was hung later that June. Though the Massachusetts General Court later annulled guilty verdicts against accused witches and granted protection to their families. Bitterness remained in the community, and the painful legacy of the Salem witch trials would undergo for centuries.

In the 14th century, people had started to believe in the supernatural and the ‘devil’s practice’ of witchcraft, in Europe. Although, the idea was already widespread in colonial New England at the time. In 1692, a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several women of witchcraft. The fear of witchcraft caused a widespread hysteria that caused then colonists to accuse a lot of men, women, and children of witchcraft. The trials was an isolated event.

The Salem witch trials are very similar to Bacon’s rebellion. Bacons rebellion was an armed rebellion formed by Virginia settlers. During this time everyone was protesting and acting very violent towards each other. The settlers were burning innocent people, as well as the people being accused of being a “witch”, who would die from being hung in a Forest. The two are very similar because everyone was accused at some point of not being what everyone else wanted, and would later on be killed for it.

Puritan Declension

Once Puritanism reached its height in the 1700’s it began to decline as the Massachusetts area began to modernize after the Witch Trials. The Puritan religion started to leave the New England area after many people started adopting the Protestant religion. The rise in Protestant interest began with ideas from the Glorious Revolution moving to New England. This was the start of a large change in the area’s religious beliefs.
