Our History

STARability Foundation has come a long way from our roots in 1983, when about a dozen parents formed a nonprofit organization known for many years as the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled (FDD). Today, we offer programs that focus on vocational training, continuing education, teamwork, social engagement and community involvement.

Trailblazer Academy

Our community-based outreach program, Trailblazer Academy, is a person-centered, holistic approach that provides participants with a broad range of support to engage in lifelong learning through enriching experiences, learning new skills, building new relationships, and finding new ways to move from just being in the community to being a valued part of the community.

Junior Trailblazer Academy

The Jr. Trailblazer Academy is our enriching after-school program that provides opportunities to high school students ages 14-22 to help facilitate a successful transition as they age out of traditional school programming. Students participate in active and engaging community-based activities that complement their educational goals and employment aspirations.

Vocational Services

Through our Vocational Services, participants learn job skills, explore career opportunities and find employment with businesses who believe in their abilities. We purposefully match people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to supportive, inclusive employers throughout the Naples community.

STAR Studio

Here, all abilities come together to create beautiful and professional gifts such as hand-poured natural soy candles, beaded jewelry, illustrated cards and more. With each artisan product, the STARs are expressing themselves, learning a special craft and developing valuable skills that translate to their time in the community, at home and in other workplaces. Their products are sold at the STAR Store, online, to a growing number of retailers and community partners, and at numerous community events. Each vibrant item sparks joy as a meaningful gift, perfect souvenir or home accent.

THRIVEability Garden

The THRIVEability garden is a collaborative, multifaceted project among the City of Naples, River Park Community Center and STARability Foundation centered on revitalizing River Park’s 2,000-square-foot garden. The garden serves as a vehicle to teach critical life skills to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are enrolled in STARability’s community-based programs. Participants work with STARability instructors, volunteers and community partners to maintain the garden.

Virtual Programs

Through our Virtual STAR Connections, participants can connect with one another and engage in innovative classes and activities from anywhere—whether they are traveling, living out of state, unable to leave home or simply well-suited to virtual learning. Join us on Zoom for continuing education, art and creative expression, health and wellness classes, life enrichment activities and many other opportunities.

Education
- HS Diploma or G.E.D.
- Completion or pursuit of a higher degree in special or general education, social work, behavioral sciences, occupational therapy, therapeutic recreation or related fields.
Technology
- Microsoft Office
- Salesforce or similar Customer Relationship Management software
- Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite
Requirements
- Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred, but not required.
- Passion for advocacy and inclusion
- Ability to be flexible, patient, and handle a variety of situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid state driver's license and clean driving record.
- Ability to pass a criminal background screening.

Summer Internships

Students may be considered for summer internships if they have a strong interest in a specific program area. Ideal candidates would have some work or long-term volunteer experience, and a plan to pursue higher education in a related field.
