The Renaissance is mostly known for it's literature, but it also included other art forms such as music, theater, art, and politics. The northern Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem was meant to be an upper-class white neighborhood in the 1880s, but rapid overdevelopment led to empty buildings and desperate landlords seeking to fill them. In the early 1900s, a few middle-class Black families from another neighborhood known as Black Bohemia moved to Harlem, and other Black families followed. She was most famous for her writing. She was born in Alabama, but moved to Eatonville as a toddler, where she spent a majority of her life. She never felt inferior as a black person as she grew up in an environment where she could witness the achievements of black people. Her mother died when Zora was 15, and her father quickly remarried right after. Zora almost beat her stepmother to death in a fist-fight. Struggling with her education at 26, she re-enrolled for public highschool passing off as a 16 year old, for she had the looks. Ever since then she has lied about her age being ten years younger.
