Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can occur when the carpal tunnel becomes narrow. This happens when the the tendons become irritated and/or inflamed. This causes pressure on the median nerve.
The palm, thumb, and three other fingers are controlled by the median nerve. This pressure can lead to pain and numbness, which is what causes CTS.

There are many ways to treat CTS without surgery. Though some may work for one person, they might not work for you. Some can be done at home, while some can't.
Icing your wrist can help numb the pain over time. Some people experience night time pains, to help stop this, some people recommend hanging the pained hand over the side of the bed.

Sometimes, CTS can become very severe for some people. Using our hands is essential in our lives. If we are experiencing extreme pains, then it will be hard to conduct our daily lives. This is why some people look to surgery for treatment as a permanent solution. There are two options for surgery; open, endoscopic. With endoscopic, the cuts are much smaller. A camera would be put in to help guide the surgeon as they cut the ligaments.

CTS dates back to World War II. During 1854, Sir James Paget was the first to report pain in the median nerve. Pierre Marie and Charles Foix were the first to find a link between the carpal ligament and the median nerve. For their first treatment, they amputated the patients hand. For the second, they recommended a wrist splint. The wrist splint is still in use today.

Women are three times more likely to develop CTS then men. if you are between the ages of 3 - 60, you are also more highly at risk of being diagnosed with CTS. People with diabetes, high blood pressure, and arthritis are also at risk of CTS. People who smoke, have a high salt intake, live a sedentary life, and/or have a high BMI, are also at a high risk of CTS.

There are also other solutions other than home remedies, or surgery. Medication is one of them. They can help with the swelling. Such as a type of a NSAID. Ibuprofen or naproxen are examples of some medications that you can take. These are all over the counter medications though. Some people look to painkillers to relieve side effects. But those can only help temporarily.

You may know a lot about the syndrome itself but do you know where exactly the carpal tunnel is located? The carpal tunnel is a passageway on the palm side of your wrist. The median nerve runs through it. The tunnel basically protects the median nerve which is attached to the thumb, index, middle, and ring finger. If it starts to swell, it will cause the median nerve to be under pressure. This is what causes pain.

When doing activities that cause CTS (such as office work), you should always take precautions and lean more towards to using ergonomic products. When you use a mouse, the angle puts pressure on the carpal tunnel. You could use a mouse cushion, this elevates your wrist at a more comfortable angle. You could also use a ergonomic mouse, these are built to support natural hand position. This will relieve stress on joints. There are also ergonomic pens for those who don't use the computer. Holding a pencil or a pen for a long time can cause writer's cramp which is also painful. Using these special tools, can help prevent CTS as well.
