Georgia State Flag

It's easy to forget what the original Georgia flag looked like, but it is front and center here. It doesn't help that there are rarely any black people, if any, in the yearbook. This flag is good for reminding us that it wasn't so long ago.

Bathtub Race

The bathtub race in 1976 was an interesting read. I never knew this existed until reading this newspaper, which I thought was really cool. I wish this were still a thing, but if it is, I would love to watch it!

I thought the whole quote that was going on in this year's book was interesting. There were whole sections with these special quotes. I didn't see many minorities, at least none that were students.

Movie Review

This was a movie review from 1984 about Places of the Heart. From what I can tell, the film is about racism and overcoming your racism from what I can tell. A great review displayed that Kennesaw was growing somewhat while the film still had problems. It was good to see a movie where the center focus was a woman being prompted in the Newspapers but still follows a few stereotypes such as her being a single mother having to take over the head of the family.

Political Cartoon

This was the first newspaper I looked at and I enjoyed it. It was an interesting political cartoon that I felt was poking fun at the Cold War. I think it helped to show that Americans were somewhat tired of the fear-mongering and more from the Cold War especially since it seemed to be dragging at this point.

Political Speakers

This was the first time I started seeing people of color in the more common yearbook. This also speaks on the speakers which was super interesting that they had previous soviet union members speaking at the school. I thought this was cool to see and them having Eleanor Smeall. Eleanor Smeall was the president of the National Organization for Women at the time of speaking.

Women's Soccer Team

I enjoyed seeing this section of a women's sports team. While looking through the others I didn't see many sections talking positively about women's sports teams. This helps to show more about how times are changing

Found in the same yearbook as the last image this was another organization that I felt was great to see. The KSC Alliance for Women being spotlighted in the yearbook shows good progress even if it was only founded this same year.

Push for change

This was great as it helps to show that the people who control the newspapers on campus are supporting women. Pushing for better opportunities which seemed unseen in previous times was good.

BIG NEWS!

This was the last one I found that was just funny to me. Seeing all the statistics showed how different the newspaper was becoming. I was surprised that people might be interested in this over other stuff. Also, being in color was a nice change of pace!

Goat Night!!!

Going through the university's archive was fun and I enjoyed looking at the past. My feelings were mixed as some things genuinely surprised me like the goat night and tub racing and others didn't like the lack of representation. I wasn't as connected with many in the past as I feel different as well and I couldn't even imagine speaking to soviet union members. The project helped me a lot in discovering how to find certain things through the archives and I'll be sure to use it again. I've certainly seen the difference in how women were looked at, especially with the lack of positive reinforcement in newspapers and yearbooks. It was good to see women's sports teams and political groups being more recognized!
