At the time, up until the 15th century, Brittany was an independent country and Vitré was one of the border towns between France and Brittany. It was then given to the benedictine monks of Marmoutier Abbey. The first stone castle was built by the baron Robert I of Vitré at the end of 11th century. It was rebuilt again from the 13th century by Baron André III. Many people as mentioned above have built or have played a part in building this magnificent French castle.
