Cassie and her brothers sulk for a week after the bus incident. They feel very guilty, but are determined not to confess. Finally, they learn from the always-gossiping T. J. that the white men were riding for a different reason that night. They are relieved.

On the way to school, T. J. shows Stacey a cheat sheet he has made. They are both in Mama's class. Stacey rips it up, but T. J. makes another one at lunch. During the test, he takes it out, and as Mama approaches, he passes it to Stacey. Stacey takes the blame, because his honor won't let him tell on T. J. However, after school he chases T. J. to the Wallace store and starts to beat him up until L. T. passes by and breaks up the fight. He says he won't tell on Stacey and the other children for going to the Wallace store, because he expects them to decide for themselves whether or not to tell Mama.

As they approach the house, Harlan Granger's silver car passes by. Big Ma says he has been bothering her about the land again. She wanders off to the wood and Cassie follows her. Big Ma tells about how her deceased husband, Paul Edward, bought the land with hard-earned money when the Grangers were poor, after Reconstruction. She tells how smart Paul Edward was and how proud he was of the land.

That evening, Stacey tells his mother about going to the Wallace store. His code of honor prevents him from explaining that it was really T. J. who cheated on the test. She doesn't punish them immediately; instead, she takes them on a special errand that Saturday. They go to visit one of the Berrys who survived the burning but is still badly burned. He had no nose or hair and his skin is badly burned. Afterwards, she explains that it was the Wallace brothers who burned the Berrys. Then they go from home to home, urging other families not to shop at the Wallace store, not mentioning the burning. Most agree. Mr. Turner explains that he has credit at the Wallace store. Mama asks if he would patron another store if someone else gave him credit, and he says he would deeply consider it.

Then T.J(Stacey's best friend)cheated on a test that Mama gave out.But when Mama was coming,he slid the sheet notes to Stacey. So when Mama walked by she didn't see T.J with the notes but instead she saw Stacey with the notes.So, when Mama saw Stacey with the notes,she whooped him.After class T.J went up to the Wallace store,thinking that Stacey wouldn't go up there. Then Mr Morrison went up there and broke up the fight. When they got home Stacey told mama everything but didn't snitch.And Mama sent them to bed early. Then they went to the Turners and they talked to the man at the store.He said that he would KEEP shoping at the wallace store even though Mama didnt want him to.So they made an aggrement.Mama said "What if i could get someone to pay you credits?""Then would you shop in Vucksburg?"Mr. Turner said "Deal Mary."But lets take a trip down memory lane.Big Ma took casey down to Caroline(that is what Big Ma's dead husband named the pond).She told Casey a story."Oh yo  Grandpa sure was smart" she said"Oh yes,he was a smart man." The white men  drenched Mr. Berry and his children in gasoline and set them a flame. One of the children dies while the others and Mr. Berry were seriously injured.

So first mama and big ma suspect that Cassie and the boys might have seen the riders at night because they are being really quite and weird. after that school time approached and Stacey got  whipped in front of everyone at school. After school had ended Stacey went to the Wallace store cause he knew T.J was going to be there and of course Cassie and the boys followed him. Stacey found T.J and started betting him up. When they were fighting a person in a wagon approached them out came Mr. Morrison he broke up the fight and took the kids home. Later mama found out that they went to the Wallace store and instead of whipping them she actually took them the Berry's home. When they were there they saw what the wallace's did to the dark figure which was Mr.Berry because they burned him. Lasty Mama went to advice her friends and family not to go to the Wallace store anymore. Most all agreed but they couldn't stop going to the Wallace because of credit and other things like it was to far but surely mama wouldn't give up. According to the text, one day at school Stacey had a history test and in the middle of the test T.J. Stacey's friend slipped out cheat notes, but when Miz Logan started walking around the classroom  T.J. quickly gave the notes to Stacey and when he looked at them  Miz Logan was walking by his desk but it was to late to put them away.

Finally, after school that day someone asked,"Where is T.J.?" Moe Tuner said,"T.J. went down to the Wallace Store." Everyone started heading towards the Wallace Store, except for Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little Man because Stacey told them to go home. Cassie was coming up with reasons for Stacey not go go but it didn't work he went anyway. When Cassie knew that wasn't going to work he went anyway. When Cassie knew that wasn't going to work she ran after him. When they got to the Wallace Store Cassie and her brothers saw T.J. and Stacey fighting. The next thing they knew Mr. Morrison caught them and broke up the fight. He told them when they got into the wagon that they were going to tell Mama he wasn't. Mama scolded the children and sent them to bed early. The next morning Mama woke them up at the crack of dawn, put them into a wagon and headed to the Berry's house to visit Mr. and Mrs. Berry. Mama took them there to teach them a lesson about how the whites do what they do to the blacks. Mama hopes the children learned their  lesson. 

On their way home Miz Logan stopped by some of her kids houses from school and talked to their parents about the Wallace store and how they should stop going there. When Mr. Morrison finally pulled up in the wagon and ordered the children in including Stacey. When they arrived home Stacey told Mr. Morrison that he would tell Mama himself. The told her how he went to the Wallace store. But, he did not tell her about his fight with T.J. Although Mama grilled him about where he had received the notes Stacey refused to tell her he had got the notes from T.J. and even though T.J. didn't seem to care Stacey felt it was only right. Instead of whipping the children Mama decided to wake them up just before dawn on Saturday morning and pile them into the wagon. When the finally arrived at their destination they found themselves at the Berry's home.Mrs.Berry answered the door. She was a fril and toothless old woman. But, the children didn't know what was awaiting them. The woman hugged the all and then hurried them inside. She took the food and lit a candle. They were shocked when they seen the figure lying motionless in the dim light. It had no nose or hair the skin was scarred and burned the lips were black like charcoal. Then they all realize it was Mr.Berry. An hour had passed and Stacey, Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little Man stilled found it hard not to stare at the figure. While Mama acted as if nothing were wrong as if some how it was normal. The children were very relived when it came time to leave. In the wagon on the way home after stopping at many o Mama's student's homes. Mama had announced that the Wallace' poured kerosene over Mr.Berry and his nephews and lit them on fire. Now the children understand why they are not able to go to the Wallace store. Mama had a plan that nobody should shop at the Wallace store and she spread the word fast. Stacey unfolds it and says " you plan on cheating?" and T.J. says " Well, naw, I ain't planning on it, just if i gotta." Before T.J could get the paperback Stacey rips it into 2 and then tears it all to pieces. T.J had seen Miz Logan coming to that's why he gave the paper to Stacey. Mama caught Stacey with the cheat paper and had whipped him in front of 30 other kids. T.J. had ran to the Wallace story to hide where the Mama told the kids they couldn't go there, Stacey running to the Wallace store, he said " I have something to take care of." Little Man said " I wanna see what he gonna do." Then Christopher-John said " I don't." So Christopher-John, Little Man, Claude, and Stacey all start running towards Stacey to the Wallace store. Stacey and all the other students were standing in the doorway, when Little Man, Christopher-John, Claude, and Cassie ran up. They squeezed through so they could see inside. A man they all knew was Kaleb Wallace stood behind the counter. Christopher-John tugged on Cassie and said " I don't like this let's go home." and Cassie said " not without Stacey." Stacey had caught T.J. while he was running and punched him squarely in his face. T.J. had rammed into Stacey putting them back onto the ground. Everybody crowded around the fight as if nobody had noticed the mule wagon halt on the road. It wasn't until Cassie realized that the shouting had stopped behind us and that the girls and boys beside me were falling back that I looked up. Mr.Morrison towered above us. Mr.Morrison did not look at Cassie, Christopher-John or Little Man, he went straight to the and lifted a still-swinging Stacey off T.J. After a long, tense moment, he said to Stacey " you and your sisters and brothers goon and get in the wagon." Mr.Morrison was talking to the kids and Stacey asked " are you going to tell mama and he said no you are." All the kids said " WHAT." and then Stacey said "fine i'll tell mama." The kids got home and and Stacey asked Big Ma what Mr.Granger was doing down here she said " oh nothing." Big Ma opened the gate and walked down the driveway and across the road into the forest. Stacey followed her. Stacey and Big Ma went on home from the Caroline after talking for a bit. Despite their effort to persuade Stacey otherwise, when Mama came home Stacey had confessed that he had been fighting T.J. at the Wallace store and that Mr.Morrison had stopped it. When Mama had asked him a question he could not answer honestly and he just simply looked at his feet and refused to speak. Finally seeing that Mama had got all the information from Stacey she was going to get, she turned to Cassie, Christopher-John, and Little Man and asked them " I suppose you 3 were at the store too huh?" Before any of them could answer Mama said " that's it." Although Mama scolded she did not whip them she sent them to bed early but they did not consider that punishment, and they doubted Mama did either. How the kids managed to escape a whipping, they couldn't fathom it until Saturday, when mama woke them all up before dawn and piled them all into the wagon. Mama taking us Southwest toward Smellings creek, she said " where we're going the man is very sick and he doesn't look like other people." We rode for almost 2 hours. As Mama pulled up on the reins and ordered us down, the front door cracked open but no one appeared and Mama said " Good morning, Mrs.Berry. It's Mary Logan, David's wife." The door swung open and a elderly lady stepped out. She said " these yo babies, aint they? Lord a'mighty ain't they fine." Mama said " sho is." Stacey and Cassie carried cans of milk and butter and Christopher-John and Little Man each had a jar of beef and a jar of crowder peas which Mama and Big Ma had canned themselves. Mrs.Berry said " Daddy, who you s'pose done come to see 'about us?' She took a sheet from a nearby table " gots to cover him." She explained " He can't hardly stand to have nothing touch him." When Mrs.Berry was visible again, she picked up a candle stump and felt around a table for matches. " He can't speak no more, the fire had burned Mr.Berry, but he still understands everybody." A still formed layed and stared at the kids. He had no nose or hair. Mama was telling the kids that the Wallaces had done this to Mr.Berry and his nephews.
