4th Issue for First Year Students: Lack of Lecturing Time

By: Muhamad Fahmi Afham Bin M Fuad (Fahmi)

One of the issues that faced by new students in their first year is lack of lecturing time. I think most first year students will find themselves in a hard situation because the lecture duration for each courses are only 3 hours a week. Students may have not enough knowledge about a certain courses, unlike high school, for each subject they learned for about 5 hours a week. How they can solve this issue of lack of lecturing time and what should be done by the university to address this issue?

The actions that can be taken according to Senior Ammar suggestions are request extra classes from the lecturers and review the past years examination papers found in the university's library. Firstly, Senior Ammar suggests to new students who faced lack of lecturing time issue to ask the lecturers to make a 2 hours extra classes sometimes to do a revision about the subjects that have been taught. In addition, lecturers can help students who have trouble with certain parts of the subjects and help them to overcome their troubles.

Lastly, review the past years examination papers found in the university's library. Senior Ammar suggests that we can find a lot of past years examination papers in the library and they may help new students to cover up from the lack of lecturing time. Moreover, by reviewing past years examination papers, first year students can find a lot of useful information such as the way to answer a question, the pattern of questions and helps students to do a revision on parts of the subjects that they do not understand.

By: Muhammad Khairil Rozy Bin Kori (Rozy)

One the issues that faced by first year students is time management. In my opinion, students for first year are new in university lifestyle and to handle with many adaptation such as online class, group assignment via online and study especially through pandemic nowadays. It requires good time management such as struggling to meet deadlines or feel overwhelmed with work or frequently end up having to stay up late into the night to finish off a piece of homework. student may have not enough time to spend time with their friends or family.and need to finish their homework. my question is how new student manage time and study effectively?

The expected action that can be done by new student to manage their time and study effectively is need to work on your time management skills. this means becoming more organised, keeping a list of what needs to be done and by when, and getting started on homework as soon as you're set it, rather then putting it off. It also means being more disciplined with your routine such as getting up earlier, planning out your day and making maximum productive use of the time you allocate to each of your subjects.

2nd Issue for First Year Students: Making New Friends

By: Marissa Delilah binti Shahrul Sazali

Making new friends and build the relationship is a challenge for first year students to get through when entering college. Students are trying to fit in so that they will not feel left out and this will eventually lead them to stress because they think they are not good enough for that specific group. This problem is common among introverts as they will keep quiet unless others are willing to talk to them first. What can be done by first year students to get to know each other and stay connected with other lecturers without feeling embarrassed or awkward?

New students should talk more and meet each and everyone of their course-mates, or at least their classmates. It's actually a typical and normal life of a first year student to get to know each other as it helps in developing their soft skills. Students also are advised to actively join clubs, workshop, society or community that is organized by the school or faculty or any other organizations. It benefits them in a way that they will be introduced to new people, be it from local or international. From this, they can learn new knowledge from their lifestyle, cultures as well as traditions. Note from Senior Ammar, most of the lecturers are friendly! Just ask help from them at a right time and they will gladly guide us till we are able to do so. :)

3rd Issue for First Year Students: Communication problem

By : Muhammad Thaqif Bin Noor Akmar Shah (Thaqif)

One of the challenges faced by the new students in their first year is how to communicate with lecturers if we do not understand something in class but we want a face-to-face explanation because explanation using WhatsApp and email is hard to understand but many lecturers told us to consult using WhatsApp and email in this online learning. What are the actions that can be taken?

The expected actions that can be done by the new student are the student may also ask their friends other than asking the lecturers if they still have something that did not understand in the class by using video call or google meet to get a proper explanation about the subject. Secondly, the student can also browse youtube videos about the explanation of the things that they did not understand because in the first year student will learn a lot of theories as has been said by one of the seniors. So it is possible to find some video about the things that we do not understand.

The expected actions that can be done by the school are the school can organize an extra class for the people that have some difficulty in following the class because it may give their ideal pace in learning or do some revision about the things that they do not understand in the class.
