Neiman is accepted into Fletcher's jazz band the next day and told to be at the classroom by 6:30 am sharp, no later. When Neiman wakes up in the morning, he realizes it's 6:34 am and he's late. He runs to the classroom where he finds out that it was a test, and practice doesn't start until 9:30 am.

Neiman emerges from the wreckage, bloody and disoriented. He runs to the theatre and gets on stage with the band, but plays horribly due to his exhaustion and disorientation. Fletcher stops the performance, walks over to Neiman, and tells him that he's not only the leading role but also his spot on the band. As Neiman walks off the stage, he turns around and tackles Fletcher, punching him and threatening to kill him. He's escorted off the stage by security.

Dragon Battle

Neiman must battle the other two drummers of the band for his spot as the lead drummer for their next performance. Fletcher pushes each drummer past their limits, with each coming out sweaty and bleeding. After hours of non-stop drumming, Neiman finally pulls out on top and Fletcher offers him the leading role.

On his way to the band's performance, Neiman's bus breaks down. He runs to the closest car rental agency and rents a car. Once he gets to the theatre, he realizes that he left his drumsticks on the chair in the agency's office. Fletcher tells him that if he isn't on stage in 10 minutes, he's losing his leading part. Neiman drives back to the agency, gets his sticks, and as he speeds back to the theatre, he's hit by a semi-truck and is thought to be dead.

Months later, Neiman sees that Fletcher is performing as a special guest in a local jazz bar. When he peeks in, Fletcher sees him and they decide to sit and talk. Fletcher explains that he got fired from Shaffer and he's doing small gigs around town. When they leave, Fletcher tells Neiman that he's hosting an annual jazz performance that gives jazz performers a second chance at success, and he wants Neiman to join, who's hesitant at first.

Neiman is able to play "Caravan" successfully, which is the song that got him kicked out of the jazz band and ultimately Shaffer. Also, during his performance, he manages to perform one of the best drum solos that the world has ever heard.
