FVHS Project Vietnam is the organization for this service.

This project we are doing is a skin cancer screening. It is an event between VACF and Orange Coast Medical Center to help out with their skin cancer screening. This interests us because we want to be more helpful to everyone and the community. It is also an opportunity to grow as a person and to better understand the world around us. Bring people good health and take care of them by helping people screen for skin cancer.

My first connection is how I was struggling at first to attend community service due to my health issues. Just like how William in "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" struggled to find his materials because if he didn't find the materials, he couldn't achieve his goal. And if I can’t make it to the service, I can't do this assignment either and that means I will fail this class. The second connection is how William inspired me to hard working. I was running back and forth to guide the patients because a lot of people came at that time. I even offered them water and stuff even though that's not even my role.

The book "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" has a connection with our community service. In the book, because of the famine, people die and start to have a disease. But Malawi has poor conditions for people to go to the hospital which causes people to die. It's pitiful for the people there jút because the family doesn't have the conditions.

Our community service event was helping tons of people who have a poor condition like people in Malawi. It was a free checking of skin cancer for our citizens which helps them to know about their health before it gets worse.

In both stories, it teaches us to take action to achieve a change for our communities. William had created a windmill for the village to get a better life and our community service helps people stay healthy and have a good life. And lastly, I think that our inspiration should be shared with more people to make a BIG change to support our community, especially in a hard time. when you already made a positive change, you will feel really proud that you have done something good for your community.

The book "Animal Farm" and VACF both have a vision. The vision of Old Major is a world where animals exist without man and the vision of VACF is "a healthy and happy community where everyone has access to fair and just opportunities to thrive. To carry out a vision, there needs to be a plan. In this project, we all worked together as a team, doing different jobs with the common goal of helping and getting patients conveniently screened for cancer. This is similar to how the animals in the "Animal Farm" book rebelled and overthrew the farm owner who did not feed them at the beginning of the story. The "Animal Farm" book has Seven Commandments which are rules they have to follow. My job also has its own rules. If I print the wrong structure or size, I must immediately put them in a trash can with a lock specifically for them because there is patient information that cannot be leaked on those papers.

I volunteered because this year I wrote an essay about cancer screening and I knew the consequences of cancer, so I wanted to help the community. I felt proud of myself because I got to make a difference. Sometimes, the printer was broken and I could not do my job. I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for the printer to work again. I learned that if there are signs of cancer, you should go get checked immediately because while doing my work, the ladies working there talked to a patient. She shared that when her daughter showed signs of illness, she did not go for a check-up immediately. Then, her illness became worse and she had to be hospitalized.

Doing this community service like skin cancer screening makes me feel I have just done something to save people's lives from cancer. This event aims to make people stay healthy, often at health check-ups to know what's going on with our health. Throughout this community service, I could feel that people around me were nice and friendly. The doctors appreciate my volunteering at the hospital. The patients talk to me about how nowadays, teenagers start to care about those things that make them happy and everyone respects me. However, there is an obstacle during this project I'm a really shy girl and it is hard for me to step out of my safety zone. So experiencing these new things is quite interesting for me, especially since I have to interact with many other people I have never met before. Overall, I also have learned a lesson from this project that we must together help people around us and be conscious of protecting our health. When I see those sick people, I feel sad for them because they don't know lots of information, and they are also ignorant about their health which leads to this cancer. So after this, I gradually learned how to use sunscreen when going out and I also want to convey this message to more people.

I wanted to do this experience because a quote from the book, “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind”, that he says in the TED talk, “I tried, and I made it”. He made his dream possible and I thought if I want to work in the hospital in the future, why not try to see if you like it by volunteering but though it is not easy like that I still had fun as I had my friends with me. I was inspired by the boy to try things even though people judge you or don’t believe in you but as long as you believe yourself you can try it and make it and I wanted to learn from at least helping the patients because I like helping people, it’s one of the many things that make me happy.

I wanted to do this service because it's important to me to help the community once in a while as it can be fun and you can learn from some many different things. As someone who wants to work in the medical field, I know it is important to understand your patients health and body to help them as much as possible, as cancer is very unpredictable and harmful. I even learned about 4 types of skin cancer as I listened to the presentation from the doctor to the patients. There were 4 different types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (the most common), squamous cell carcinoma (the second most common), merkel cell carcinoma, and melanoma (one of the most serious type of skin cancer). I also heard stories of his (the doctor's) patients and to remember to put sunscreen on your ear and of course, any skin that is exposed to the sun. Honestly, when I got to the hospital I felt nervous and scared about what was going to happen and the environment around us but it was all fun because I had my friends and turns out I learned a lot and got candy and little erasers. But most importantly, I got to learn from this experience.
