Children are more willing to share and collaborate with others. They are also more likely to share to the teacher when something bothers them.

Include Diversity in the curriculum: Making small changes to the curriculum to make it more culturally responsive can be a bigger impact than teachers think. For example, teachers can use a book with a gay character or gay parents that can still align with the curriculum. But making those small changes can make the curriculum more relatable and it opens up the conversation of diversity.

Don't ignore it: If homophobia actions arise in the classroom or in school, take the time to discuss it to the class that it is not tolerated. Teachers can make a lesson out of it and can even broaden it to other types of oppression. I told him that that's good that he loves his best friend. But then he told me that he loves him more than a friend. 

As a parent, I was stunned. There's no manual that parents can just run to when your son tells you he is gay. Abe is only 12 years old and I don't think he truly understand what it means to be gay. But I think my husband and I have always known. I didn't tell Abe that of course, since that might hurt his feelings. I am just happy that he felt comfortable enough to tell me. I told Paul, my husband, about what Abe told me. It bothered him for a bit. We talked about it and he finally understood. 

Our next step as parents is to safe guard Abe from any harm or teasing that he might get as a child. Fortunately, Abe has already told his teacher Ms. Gomez that he might be gay. My husband and I are planning to sit down with Ms. Gomez to talk about Abe and to be sure that we are all in the same page. I hope that she will have some strategies in how to handle having a gay child in her classroom.
