Their neighbors endure a scar from Ceasar, and Lousida has kept him shackled up for years because of it. Still, Joe appears ignorant of the rest of the group's fears for Ceasar: "He strode bravely until him and pat him on the head, still Louisa's cushioned clamor of warning, and even tried to set him indefinite. Louisa grew so frightened that he desisted but retained telling welcome belief in the matter completely against one's will at intervals. 'There ain't a better-natured dog in city," he would mention, and allure below-right vicious to maintain him tied up skilled.

Joe Dagget's personality lacks logic and reason. A dangerous dog that has chewed its neighbor, which has been confined for years as a result of its aggression, is the very thing Joe wants to let out. His choice is reckless, not considering the hazard behind issuing Ceasar; he proves to be lacking mental capacity and the ability to make logical decisions.

Joe is subject to characteristics fit under the psychoanalytical perspective. He has given into his basic insticts and sexual drive. Although he has pledged himself to Lousia, Lily appeals to him more, and he's willing to break the fourteen-year engagement of loyalty in order to pursue Lily and his own wants. This is selfish and unfair to Louisa, who has waited years for Joe faithfully. His flaws also contribute to the story's climax; his selfishness is what causes the secret cheating to take place with Lily, thus proving that Joe lacks logic.

The author looks at Joe from a psychoanalytical viewpoint in order to contrast Louisa. Critics review her as "an artist and a visionary, heroic, active, wise, ambitious, and even transcendent" (Couch 1). Comparing these two through the psychoanalytical lens makes Joe Dagget stand out as someone that isn't mentally present. Throughout the book, Joe Dagget displays a lack of decision-making and mental awareness. The theme created with this is: Some lack the sophistication and reason required to make logical decisions.
