In the early 20th century, sanatorium were very common in the United State to treat tuberculosis. Medical experts reported that 2200 feet above sea level, air pressure was equal to that in the blood vessels, and activities, scenery and lack of stress help healing. After the discovery of streptomycin antibiotics in 1943 (not to be confused with penicillin in 1928), the necessity for sanatoriums declined.
