Some of the Stop Motion Films that I took inspiration from for my research was 'The Box Trolls'.
I remembered watching this film when I was a lot younger and being reminded by it during one of my classes in my second year of the course. The scene that I remembered most was the infamous dance scene in which everything went horribly wrong in a short amount of time. The scene didn't use too much dialogue since the use of the character's facial gestures and movement already said enough to the audience.

One of my teammates, Eliza Calcraft, suggested creating an animation of the story of Clive Wearing.
Clive Wearing is a pianist who suffers from a type of amnesia in which he is unable to create new memories. We all thought as a team that it would be extremely interesting to use his story as a form of inspiration. We felt as though there would be a lot of themes and metaphors to tackle within our project.
There will be no dialogue in the animation whatsoever and it will be accompanied by sound foley and by music that would help with the mood of the animation.
We also felt as though we should experiment with different styles of stop motion such as cutout, claymation and object (we aren't too sure at the moment). However, the main style we will be using is puppet.
For my group project, I will be the producer, animator and scriptwriter.

This film came out recently and I honestly loved the idea that the story is Guillermo's own interpretation of the classical tale of 'Pinnochio'.
I loved the idea of Pinnochio accepting who he is and learning throughout the film to love himself for who he is instead of changing himself for other people. Which is extremely ironic since it tackles the original story of Pinnochio which is about a boy who wants to be human and considered 'normal'.
All in all, I really liked the story and art direction of this film since it personifies an inanimate being to have human feelings.

I really liked the idea of the repetition of him playing on the piano at the beginning of the animation as well as the end.

Diary - We will include a diary in our animation that has the sentence 'Now, I am finally awake'. The repetition of that sentence and him scribbling it out will really help emphasize the idea of memory loss in the project.

Clive's Wife - The only thing that isn't distorted in his mind Everything else isn't important to him apart from her.

I extremely enjoy seeing animation tests that some character animators have made behind the scenes since it gets to show the hard work the animators had done for the project.
What I really like about this video is that we hardly see Caroline's father's character but throughout the video, we can understand what his personality is like throughout his movement. By his movement, I mean by his slouched posture, the way he ruffles his shirt and hands with the well articulated hands.
We can even understand that he isn't an energetic character due to his character design, how he is constantly sitting down in the film shots that he is in and how he always seems exhausted in ever scene that he is in.
reference: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MRiY1HBeJC0

Through Courtney's character design, just going in this video blind, we can understand how she is a stereotype of a popular girl in high school who has an obsession with her technology.
The mean-spirited self absorbed girl is an extremely entertaining trope to the audience since it can be done differently every time.
Just from the video alone she seems as though that she is a sassy and sarcastic character through her body movement. Some of these examples are the moving of the hips, the aggression that she has when simple tasks don't go her way. such as, 'painting her nails' and 'talking on her phone'.
Even her character design says a lot about her character since her face is always annoyed and the colour palette of her design gives, again, a stereotypical popular girl with the colour pink.
reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yYXFM5t5gQ

This is a short animated film directed by Tomoki Misato. It is a dark and modern retelling of 'The Wolf and the Seven young kids, which is based of Grimm Fairy Tales.
I chose this short film, since I believe it is able to express the severity of the situation that the kids go through. It is not a film that it is easy to watch due to the morbid, sinister and themes which are trigger worthy.
However, there was a lot of symbolism due to the colour of the human child's clothes, as well as the idea of using goats and wolf.
Through this film I realised that lighting has a massive role when it comes to setting the mood of the animation. Due to this, I believe I will use this as a form of inspiration for the lighting in my group project.

Even though this youtube short is more about the creation of Coraline, it still shows her personality through the video.
Through the snippets that we are shown, it shows us that she is a childish character that tends to get annoyed extremely easily. Since she is always shown yelling and is just frustrated when interacting to characters. This is shown through her body movement, hand movement, walking and even through her facial reactions.
There is also a snippet of just the armature with her head. This shows to me that she is an incredibly curious character and wants to know more about her surroundings and situations. We see this as she is interacting with an object (which I'm not too sure what it is exactly) in her hand. It shows how she is able to interact with unfamiliar objects to her.
reference:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Nznw1AW02qU

Since it has been a while since I have last written a script for a project, I wanted to try to refresh my memory a bit.
There were things that I still remembered, however, I wanted to make sure that the storyboard artist could understand my script as well as the shots and angles associated with it.
So, since I am more of a visual learner, I decided to go for some videos on YouTube. I was told to use Celtx since it was extremely budget friendly for students since their first project would be for free. Not only this, it could help format the script a lot better compared to programs such as Microsoft Word.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3b-SeOUIw0&t=9s

Unlike 2D, Stop Motion puppets need replaceable puppet heads that can help display the emotions of the characters.
I really enjoyed the way in how they were able to solve the issue that they had with Sally's head. It was really interesting find out that the head didn't function well on her body but since she had long hair, it didn't affect the animation process of the film.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLw-Fo8uhis

I originally took video reference of a friend of mine showing me how him getting up from the bed should be like.
As many times as I had re-shot this scene, it was impossible to do the movement I wanted. The reason for this was that the puppet was too stiff. It was impossible to bed his arms to even express that he was pushing himself up.
So, this shot was a big fail for this research because he looked like he was floating upwards. Unfortunately, the puppet was extremely wonky and that it was difficult to move him in a way that felt natural.
Another thing that was extremely difficult to keep in mind was to make sure to not hit the curtain in the room. The curtain would move every so often, so I had to re-shoot this shot quite a few times until I felt as though it was the best result.

However, due to the lack of movement of the puppet, I tried as best as I could to make shake and have this sort of 'panic reaction'. Even though the puppet was extremely difficult to articulate, I also tried to move his eyes so I could show a lot better the distress that he was going through at that moment.
It made me realize after this experience of animating with the puppet that the condition and quality of the puppet matters a lot to the animators.

I really enjoyed the idea of the LAIKA shorts on youtube trying to show personality through their puppets, so I decided to do the same myself. I found this puppet in one of the puppet rooms of the studio and decided to animate her in movements that I wanted her to do.
I really wanted to make her do really cute poses since I liked the idea of her being really shy. This personality came out really well even through her design.
I noticed when filming her on the rig, that it was extremely difficult to attach her. I had to have one of my peers, who knew more about puppets help create a rig.
I recorded a video of myself to be able to capture the movement that I had wanted through her legs and face.

I noticed when animating with this puppet, for such an old puppet it was still able to move a lot more flexibly than the puppet that I had used for my group project. It wasn't too stiff but it was sturdy enough to not feel like it was going to break after each movement that I made her do. She had really good wiring around the legs that made her seem more flexible with certain leg movements.
One of the issues I noticed with her was that due to the arms being under a scarf, she felt extremely limiting in arm movement. So, I decided to give her simple movements but still be able to show her personality.
reference footage: https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/item/119489248-flirtatious-young-playful-beauty-blowing-and-sending-air-kis

Within the group project itself, I really tried to listen to my peers as well as my teachers critiques about my script writing work. I wanted to finalize the script as perfectly as I could before the production of the storyboard as well as the animatic. Since this story wasn't mine but was one of my teammate's, I wanted to make sure I discussed with her properly about what her intentions were when wanting to direct this film.
Regarding the character animation in my group project, I realised that there were some issues while trying to animate the puppet. I felt as though, due to the puppet being extremely stiff it brought a lot of limitations to the animators in terms of movement and emotion.
I think the hardest part was trying to get Clive and Deborah to express different emotions apart from shock due to the fact that the puppets had no eyebrows and that they had a lot of unnecessary movement due to the lack of padding of the puppets, which showed heavily on their clothes.
Despite this, I felt as though I was able to show the emotions of Clive to the best of my capabilities despite having a lot of issues with the puppet itself. I feel as though we were still able to convey the message that we wanted throughout the film, with its colour theory as well as music score.
In addition to this, since I was able to look at different works from different studios that showed character animation, I felt as though my own little experiment with the girl puppet was extremely effective. I was able to use references of myself and other source material a lot more effectively. The experiment helped a lot since the girl puppet was a lot more flexible than Clive, so, I felt a lot more comfortable in trying to animate with her. Even though the puppet also had her own limitations, I feel as though I was still able to express the personality that I wanted her to have.
Throughout this experience, I realised that creating my own personal experiment with the girl puppet and one with Clive was extremely helpful.
I say that it was helpful because it really showed the difference between my animation styles by using the different puppets.
Even though Clive wasn't as successful as I had hoped, I was content that the female puppet was a lot more successful.
Lastly, if I had more time to animate, I would've animated with the chimera armatures provided by the university and show the movements that I wish I could've done with Clive to its full extent since they barely have limitations. Another thing to note is I would experiment by animating with rigs as well as magnets to see which was more effective for my own style of animation.

I liked this idea since it got the audience to question things such as 'Why is he in the hospital?' 'What happened to him for him to be there?'
The use of the still shots in the animation were really well thought out.
Not only this, but we also used this shots to focus on some world building in the room and make the room show that it has a lot of detail around it instead of being such a simple hospital room. So in this shot for instance, it shows the doctor's notes on Clive's conditions.

For this shot, we loved the focus on the floor in the hospital room and show the 'Get Well Soon' cards that Clive would've received from family members and friends due to this incident of his.
Again, this makes the audience question this shot and scene as it progresses.

For my research, I wanted to depend on the Gibb's cycle, The reason for this was because I felt as though it suited my way of researching.
DESCRIPTION

What occurred in your research?

What was the outcome of your research?

Did you have other expectations throughout your research?

I felt as though these were extremely convenient in my work of study. It also allowed me to focus more on my feelings as I was researching this topic area.
FEELINGS

How did you feel during the experiment?

How did you feel before or after the experiment?

How do you feel now?

EVALUATION

What was good and bad about the experience?

What went well?

What didn’t go so well?

What did you and other people contribute to the situation (positively or negatively)?

ANALYSIS

Why did the experiment not go well?

Why did the experiment ended up being successful?

CONCLUSION

What did I learn from this experiment?

What else could I have done better?

ACTION PLAN

How would I have done things differently if I were to?

How will I develop the required skills I need?

I decided to write a list of questions to myself that I felt were appropriate for my research. I will be basing my research off this cycle so I wanted to make sure that my thoughts and feelings are presented throughout my research.
