Women often are objectified and seen only to be for the use and pleasure of men. This is shown in the Selkies story when the ownership of the woman is then taken over by the man when he falls in love with her and steals her seal skin so she cannot return back to her previous life of freedom and can only serve as a lover to her husband and a mother to her child. When she regains her individuality and sense of self again she has the power to return back to her freedom.

Women being pressured into serving for men, and being only viewed as mothers and lovers is a common concept in society and many people who experience this feel they have no other choice but to fulfil this purpose, and therefore lose their sense of freedom.

Primary - What can you see?
A stop motion video of a seal losing its skin then transforming into a woman who then is sunbathing when she then meets a human who falls in love with her at first sight. The man steals her skin and they get married and have a child. The woman then finds the skin and goes bak to the ocean as a seal (selkie).

Secondary - What do you know?
The woman is upset and isn't in love with the man which we can see by the use of facial expressions and broken heart. She wants to return back to her life in the ocean which is shown by her looking back to the ocean in the background and appears upset. She doesn't want to have the life on land which is also shown when she appears to be forced to be. mother or lover - neither of which she wants which is shown by the broken heart. When she finds her skin and she can return back to the ocean she is happy which we see again in facial expressions and when she immediately goes back.

Tertiary - What does it mean?
The objectification of women in society being only viewed as the mother or lover, and viewed to be for the possession of a man. This lifestyle can often strip women of their sense of freedom and individuality as oftentimes women are expected to assume full responsibility of the roles in childcare and as a wife / partner.

Selkies are mythical creatures that can transform themselves from seal to human form and back again. The Selkie legend originated from Orkney and Shetland Islands where ‘selk’ in Scottish means seal.

In the Selkie tale, a man found a beautiful female selkie sunbathing on a beach, he then stole her skin and forced her to become his wife and bear his children. Years later the selkie found her skin and escaped back to seal form, back to the sea and to never return again, leaving her own children behind.

They are a symbol of a calm and beautiful temperament.
