Common Concerns Among Beginning Helpers

1. It is important for me to know that my clients are making steady improvement.

I feel as a helper I strive to be perfect. I know that is impossible. Even after time and much practice I will have my downfalls. Even so I will strive to be the best helper I can be. It's a work in progress and not all clients can be helped and their progress may differ.

2. I worry my clients will see that I am a beginner and wonder if I am competent.

It's only normal to feel nervous. I have to keep in mind that these feelings are normal. I will move forward and feel confident with the academic background that will support me in my work. I will be attentive to what my client has to say and respond accordingly to the best of my knowledge. I will be there to support them on their journey to conquer barriers they may have. I will show them that they are worthy as a human being, that they are loved, and to let them understand why they think they way they do.

3. During a counseling session, I might find myself wanting to give advice.

I am the oldest of three. I feel that I've been entitled to have my opinion in everything including advising to my younger sibling. Hence life's situation, at work or at home I feel I must take control and give advise on what are the best decision. I will learned, over they years, to respect everyone's decision and support them. In counseling I've learning how to support clients by helping problem solve depending upon what's the best for them at that moment in their life.
