This skill lesson can seem like a lot at first, so I used tongue twisters from "Fox in Socks" by Dr. Seuss to ease them into it. I had them complete the checklist from the Model by pairing up and reading pages from the book about the Tweedle Beetle Battle. Once they understood what that sounded like fluidly, then they were able to move on to "Your Turn" and analyze their reading with the grade level text.

This poem has all the drama of an action movie, but definitely required "translating" before my students could understand what was going on. This task was made easier by using the beginning ELL scaffolds for the think questions, which give the students a word bank and fill-in-the-blank responses to each one. I also used this old clip from one of my favorite mini-series so they could see and hear the poem being read with passion and intensity.

My students needed a lot of scaffolding for this lesson because not only could they not identify figurative language types, they also had no idea how to identify a rhyme scheme. I love to use Blooket to teach and reinforce identification type skills. There are several different modes of gameplay, and the kids get into it. I have Blooket Pro, so I get reports of their results after every game, which gives me instant data to determine where I need to go next. Once we had a class average of about 80% on this Blooket, then we were able to go on to the StudySync lesson, which helps the kids not only understand WHICH figurative language type was used, but WHY the author chose to use that particular type in that particular place. It's fascinating!

For Rhyme Scheme we practiced on stanzas from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." The book is great for this because every stanza has a different rhyme scheme so there's lots of opportunity for growth. I used this quick Blooket to check for understanding: https://www.blooket.com/set/60253e3d74f6d10012314532
