What is the Cold War?

The Cold War was the tension that was built between the US and the USSR following the second World War. Going into WWII, the USSR and the US were already not on good terms, as the US was already wary of communism and the USSR's totalitarian government. The response to this tension was the USSR's attempts to spread it's communistic government tactics and the US's attempts to contain it. This attempt to contain the situation continued to rise to the point where it not only traveled to the Cuba when the Soviets tried to establish a Nuclear Weapons Base, but also to the stars when America attempted to outdo the Soviets who put Sputnik into orbit by landing on the moon.

Containment was a strategy formed by the US to do what its name suggests: To contain the spread of Communism wherever it may pop up. This strategy gave birth to many follow-ups, such as Mcarthyism (The process of ferreting out "Communists" that trampling over civil rights) and the U2 Incident, in which the Soviets captured a US spy and the US captured one of theirs.

There was a relaxed session in the Iron Curtain after Stalin's death, but it got worse once again after the construction of the Berlin Wall. The Iron Curtain mostly ceased in 1989-1990.

The Marshall plan and the Truman Doctrine are not just similar but directly correlated. The Truman Doctrine established that the US would provide support to the Central and Eastern European countries under communistic or authoritarian oppression. In 1947, Harry Truman assigned George C. Marshall to be Secretary of State, who created the Marshall Plan: a plan to rebuild Central and Eastern Europe and contain Communistic Activity. This plan was followed by the Eisenhower doctrine, which strived to develop political and military relations with friendly countries in the European area in an attempt to decrease the spread of Communism.
