Symbols are objects, pictures, or other visual devices that aid in the understanding of a topic by others. This image is from a car owner's manual from the 1990s. They are demonstrating the car's feature of being able to move the pedals closer or farther away from the driver, allowing shorter drivers to drive as well, to demonstrate that the car is suitable for a wide range of demographics. They accomplish this by depicting heels, which are commonly associated with women. This is an example of a symbol because the image of the heels indicates that they are depicting a woman.

Dysfunctions are social processes that have a negative impact on how society operates. Poor grades are a good example of this in education, as shown in the image. Poor grades indicate dysfunction because they indicate that the individual did not study for their exam, which can have a negative impact on how they interact with society, as poor grades can lead to stress and depression, as well as limit their future opportunities due to a lack of understanding in the subjects.

Culture shock occurs when a person who is accustomed to one culture finds themselves in a new environment with a new, different culture, resulting in surprise, confusion, and frustration. This photo I took while driving up north in the snow is a good example of culture shock, as I grew up in an area where it doesn't snow much, so seeing this much snow piled on the side of the road was very surprising and unusual for me. This, however, may be normal for the people who live here.

Norms are similar to moral rules established by society to define what is right and important to its members. The photo above shows me and some family members celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks. In America, it is considered important by society to celebrate the Fourth of July, particularly with fireworks, which is why this image exemplifies the norm.

Popular cultures are common cultural experiences and activities in mainstream society. The photo above is of me at Universal Studios. Universal Studios is an important part of pop culture, as is media such as movies and television. Shows like the Simpsons in the background of the picture, as well as many other Universal Studios productions, are a big part of popular culture in society, which is how this picture represents popular culture.

Deviance is defined as a breach of social norms. The image above depicts my first car. People I know parents usually buy their children a cheap and safe car. They don't buy an old Corvette because teenagers are irrational and can put themselves in danger if they are irresponsible. My uncle sold us this car for a good price, so my parents bought it for me as my first car. This demonstrates deviance because my parents broke a social norm by giving me a sports car that is relatively dangerous for a first car.

Stereotypes are broad assumptions about a group of people based on the actions of a few individuals within that group. The image above depicts a doctor's handwriting. There is a common misconception that doctors have terrible handwriting. This is not true, because a few doctors' handwriting cannot be representative of all doctors. The image above is one I found on Google when I searched for a doctor's handwriting. My doctor, on the other hand, has excellent handwriting. Stereotypes are harmful because they can negatively label all members of a group, even if it does not apply to them.

Material culture are objects that belong to a group of people. The picture above show pictures of Hindu Gods that many Hindus worship around the world. Because these objects are universally recognized by Hindus all around the world, this a good example of material culture, as these objects and belongings are a part of life for many Hindus.

2. Ideal Culture

This is an example of ideal culture because Indian cultural standards require women to wear henna (the ink used for hand designs) during cultural events. However, nowadays, women do not use henna as frequently, and it takes a long time to remove, which is why many people do not adhere to the ideal culture as strictly.

What does it mean? Henna paste represents marital health and prosperity. Women typically wear it to cultural events and weddings. It is a very old tradition, which is why many people today avoid it because they believe it is out of date. Others may use henna simply because it is fashionable.

What is important missing from the picture? The circumstances of the individual in the picture are not visible in the image. As previously stated, henna was traditionally used for brides' weddings. We don't know if this person is following the ideal culture and applying henna for the wedding or if they are just having fun with it.

This image exemplifies discrimination because we see two people of color raising their fists for something while the white man does not. This could imply that this white man does not share the same beliefs as people of color.

What important information is missing? We don't know the full story behind what's going on in this image. As a result, we should not jump to the conclusion that the white man is racist and discriminatory, because the reason that people of color are raising their hands could be something else, and it could be a coincidence.

What exactly happened here? The two people of color in the picture are Tommie Smith and John Carlos. They raised their hands to express their opposition to racism and poverty. This occurred during the Olympic Games in 1968. Many black athletes did the same thing that year in order to receive equal treatment.
