Dean's Beans buys around 500,000 pounds of coffee beans each year. They purchase the raw beans for about $1.90 to $3.00 a pound. After roasting the beans, they then sell them for around $10.00 per pound. To decide what price to sell at, they have to look at the price of the beans, price of bags, hours of labor for people, machines, buildings and cost of shipping. They also have to add a little more to the price so they can make a profit to keep the business running. Dean's Bean sells its coffee to places close, like New York, but also all around the US.

When pricing the coffee at Dean's Beans they use supply and demand. The supply of coffee beans depends on many different things. Because it is an agricultural product, the supply can be affected by nature. Some examples are droughts and diseases. If one of those happens then there wont be a lot of beans for farmers to sell, so farmers will raise the price. Then Dean's Bean will have to buy the beans at that higher price and then sell them again to the public for an even higher price. Demand can also affect the price. If there is another type of coffee that is popular, then it will be more difficult for Deans Beans to find it. So, if supply is high and demand is low, price will go down and vise versa.

Dean's Beans ships its coffee in and out of Massachusetts. Although, to do this, they need capital. Capital is money required to starting a business. Dean's Beans needs capital for the roasting machines, the bags for packaging the beans, and the trucks and fuel for transporting the beans. They also have labor costs. They need this to pay employees and accountants. If done right, these investments in capital should lead to profits.

A products journey from where it was made to where it ends up is called its global supply chain. Dean's Beans are either grown in a Guatemalan farming community or are grown in Africa or Asia. The farmers then pick the coffee and get it ready for shipping. The beans are then passed through customs and then shipped by boat to a US port, such as the Port of New York. After that, they arrive to Dean's Bean facility by truck or train. At the facility, the beans are roasted, bagged and then sold to the public.
