Element #1- Research: Thyroid Cancer

The main character in The Fault in our Stars, Hazel, has had thyroid cancer since she was 13 years old. Thyroid cancer is cancer in the thyroid, which is a gland in the base of the neck. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the way your body uses energy. Although thyroid cancer cannot be prevented, it can be treated. It is treated with radiation and chemotherapy.
Hazel went through both radiation and chemotherapy. Although she is still sick, she is getting better. The only problem she is having now is that her lungs get filled with fluid very often, which does not allow her body to get enough oxygen. This lack of oxygen causes her to get terrible headaches, which Hazel was admitted to the hospital because of in the book. She also has to carry a oxygen tank with her everywhere she goes because she cannot breathe on her own.

Element #2- Respond to the Text: Themes

Two prominent themes in the book are life and death. Hazel and Augustus talk about the issue of life and death a lot in the book. They are forced to deal with the topic of death as young people because of their conditions. Hazel and Augustus often repeat a quote from their favorite book that states "the thing about pain is it demands to be felt." They both have to deal with pain and death at such an early age. They also try to ignore the topic of death by trying to live while they have the chance by doing fun things everyday.
The picture below represents life and death. The left side represents life, because all of the leaves are still there. The right side represents death because it has no leaves.

My book has made me appreciate life a lot more. Hazel is my age and I couldn't even imagine going through what she is going through. I'm so lucky to not have to worry about going through pain everyday or when my last day is. Hazel has to go through so much each day. My book has made me thankful to wake up healthy each day. "You don't get to choose if you get hurt in this world... but you do have some say in who hurts you" (Green, 313.)
The picture symbolizes the appreciation of your heartbeat, or the appreciation to still be alive.
