I think Eugene Talmadge was a stuborn political figure that believed  only he was right about everything. He abused his power to get whatever he wanted. For example, Talmadge spent department funds on a scheme to raise the price of hogs. He also spent $40,000 from department funds on the Kentucky Derby. Furthermore, he attempted to fire two University System administrators, allegedly for advocating integrated public schools.
