Claude Monet was born in Paris, France on November 14, 1846. On December 5, 1926, Monet died from lung cancer in Giverny, France. He was a French artist who founded French Impressionism art. Monet painted during different artistic periods: Impressionism, Modern Art and Realism. The major art period that Monet painted in was the impressionist; this main purpose of this movement was to record visual reality in terms of transient effects of light and color. Monet had two wives: Camille Doncieux (m. 1870-1879) and Alice Hoschede (m. 1892–1911). Claude Monet made over 2,500 paintings, drawings and pastels during the Impressionism movement; he also founded the Impressionist art movement and had a major influence over future artist. Monet´s favorite model was his first wife, Camille Doncieux, and he even painted her on her death bed in 1879. At one point in Monet´s life, he tried to commit suicide due to financial issues.

Made in 1866, Monet painted Women in the Garden in Paris, France. Similar to other Monet paintings, Women in the Garden was made with oil paint on a canvas during the Impressionism art movement. Paul Cezanne painted Mont Sainte-Victoire (#125) in 1904 to 1906. The biggest similarity between Women in the Garden and Mont Sainte-Victoire were their mediums; both paintings were made with oil paint on a canvas. While Monet´s painting showed people, Cezanne´s did not. They were also painted in different art periods; Monet was a believer in the Impressionism movement while Cezanne was against the idea of Impressionism, which was also known as the Post-Impressionism movement. A fun fact about Mont Sainte-Victoire is that it is believed that Cezanne painted it over 60 times.

The Terrace at Saint-Adresse

The Terrace at Saint-Adresse by Monet was made in 1867 in Saint-Adresse, France. It was made in the Impressionism movement and was made with oil paint on a canvas. Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) painted The Jungle (#142) in 1943. These two pieces of art are very different, but they both show people (although Lam´s is abstract while Monet´s seems realistic). Like most, Monet´s paintings are made within the Impressionism movement but Lam used Cubism and Surrealism in his artwork. The Terrace at Saint-Adresse is relatively small compared to The Jungle. Monet´s art is 3´3¨ by 4´3¨ and Lam´s art is 8´ by 7´5¨.

Monet painted Wild Poppies with oil paint on a canvas in 1873. This piece of art was painted near Argenteuil. Just like many other Monet paintings, Wild Poppies was made during the Impressionism art period. The Saint-Lazara Station (#116), also painted by Claude Monet, is very similar to Wild Poppies. Not only were both paintings made with oil on canvas during the Impressionism period, they were both made near Argenteuil.
