When I was in college, I did something dangerous when I was driving. I took my eyes off the road. Yes, I did. I was going around a bend, and my camera started falling off the seat. I reached down to steady my camera, and in doing so, I lost control of my car. It skidded off the road, and it's wheels caught in the trench. My car flipped end over end, smashing all four tires and breaking out every window except the front windshield. The top of my car was crunched down except for a space right over the driver's seat, as if my personal angel held the top of the car up just over my head. I was able to climb out the driver's side window, since it was no longer there. I was miraculously okay. I did faint a half an hour later, very dramatically, into the arms of my boyfriend.

It was a dangerous decision to go camping for the weekend on Hawk Mountain. I didn't stop to think why there were so many hawks. I found out. We loaded our VW bus, nicknamed "The Bread Loaf" due to the brown and orange paint job, full of camping gear and high school students, and headed for the mountain. When we arrived, it was dark. Using flashlights, we navigated to treacherous trail, and made our way towards the top. We found a clearing for our campsite on top of the mountain, near to a cascading cliff rock ledge. We spread out tarps and sleeping bags to sleep under the stars. In our group of twenty individuals, we had only one tent. Soon we had a "rip-snorter" going to roast marshmallows and hot dogs. We stuffed our faces, and sang along to campfire songs, oblivious of the lurking danger below. Slithering and slurking behind us, a copperhead snake made his debut through our camp, promptly changing our laughter into shrieking fear. Somehow, we survived the night, but at the first light of dawn, the crack in the rocks below revealed a bed of copperheads just feet below the surface of where we camped for the night. We high-tailed it out of there as fast as our legs could take us.

In the Spring of 2000 my best friend and I were camping in national parks across America as he drove me out west to live in California. My dangerous experience occurred in Yellowstone National park. We wanted to do some back country camping in a particularly beautiful corner of the park which had several mama and baby grizzly bear sightings recently. In order to get a permit to camp we had to sit through a 30 minute instructional video with a park ranger that taught us how to handle encounters with bears. In the parking lot there was a 1-ton buffalo roaming around. They seem nice until they change their mind and decide to charge. At the trail-head there was brightly colored sign indicating that this was a bear frequenting area. As we were walking down the trail on the lookout for bears we saw a massive bull moose that was staring us down. Needless to say we took an extremely wide path around this majestic but volatile creature. We didn't see any bear that day, but that night, as we stepped out into the meadow to fetch some water to put out our campfire, we heard the howling of at least three different wolves! Theses were definitely not coyotes! We heard and saw them in several other parks throughout the week. This was a much deeper and more pronounced HOWL that only a wolf would make. We immediately returned to our tent were we slept with our axes in our hands ...just in case. The wolves didn't bother us anymore that night, but another camper on the other side of the meadow told us that our friend, Mr. Moose, was about 10-yards away from our tent for about 30 minutes that morning!!!

I was moving blocks of wood at my cabin in the Poconos when all of a sudden a snake latched on to me. I immediately just stood still for about 2 minutes. Then I started to feel lots of pain, then all of a sudden. they let go, The next afternoon, I was shooting archery, and all I heard was a scream from the outside shower. I immediately looked in the back of the cabin, and there was my sister's friend running around the house butt naked. Then I turned around and she was running to the woods with a bear the size of about two tractors running after her. I immediately ran towards the bear, and I picked up a gun from a nearby wood stock circle. Then all of a sudden, my brother-in-law came from behind me and took the gun. I came with him to chase the bear. Then all of a sudden, I took a cut into the woods, and the Bear jumped out on his two hind legs, and tried to maul me. Then the bear took charge at my brother-in-law, but he dodged it, and somehow and it was a surprising move, and my brother-in-law shot it.
