Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

Erikson's first stage of psychosocial development is when an infant is fully conditional on, evolving trust found in the dependability and aspect of the child's caregivers. In the text, it stated that “the critical element in developing trust is sensitive, responsive, consistent caregiving” (Martorell pg. 54). Some signs of when an infant has gained trust are when they let their mother go, good eye contact, and welcoming touching. Since our mother was always a stay-at-home mom when we were all infants. We always received love and comfort from her. With that, my sister grew to trust in her life now.

Erikson’s second stage of psychosocial development occurs at the age of 18 months to 3 years old. Children at this stage focus on creating a significant sensation of dignity. They also gain self-confidence and they can do more stuff on their own. The text states that “children at this stage develop a sense of independence and self-sufficiency over shame and doubt” (Martorell, pg. 14). So children at this stage become independent, able to stand on their own, and work well with others. In my sister’s life, my parent’s let her make decisions on her own like choosing what bows she wants for her hair. With that, my sister advanced into an autonomous child. While my parents watched my older sister as a toddler she was always independent when it came to clothes, shoes, and picking her snacks.

Erikson’s third stage of psychosocial development occurs from preschool to 5 years of age. During this stage when discord happens between initiative and guilt children learn to maintain themselves and begin to directly play and have social interplay. In the text, it stated that “children who learn how to regulate these opposing drives develop purpose and courage to pursue goals while feeling inhibited by guilt” (Martorell pg. 72). At that age my older sister was in preschool and developed initiative. Since my other two older siblings were older than my sister she didn’t feel fear. Or guilt because she tried many things while being with them all day after school.

Erikson’s fourth stage of psychosocial development typically involves ages 7 to 13 years old. When children are in this stage they will develop progress. In which they will learn how to read, write, and solve mathematical problems. As stated in the text “industry is developed by praise, motivation, and self-esteem, if a child is unable to obtain these, they may develop a feeling of low self-worth and thus develop a sense of inferiority” (Martorell pg. 93). When my sister was a child she was tumbling and swimming. She loved going to school to see her friends and learn many things. With that, she learned many skills and her resolution was gaining self-confidence from all her peers and coaches by overcoming difficult skills.

Stage 5: Identity Vs. Role Confusion

Erikson’s fifth stage of psychosocial development starts in the teen years like 12 to 18 years of age. At this stage, teenagers inspect their self-determination and grow a sense of self by testing roles. Then they blend them to structure a single identity. Also, at this stage, teenagers have an active interest in the opposite sex, plans for the future, and are self-accepting. In the text, it states that “young people resolve the issues of choice of an occupation, the adoption of values to live by, and the development of a satisfying sexual identity” (Martorell pg. 109). With my sister working and being involved in clubs. She’s made many friends which helped her move past role confusion and create her identity. Right now in life, she knows who she is, her beliefs, and her likings.

Erikson’s sixth stage of psychosocial development takes place at the ages of 20 - 40 years old. Throughout this stage, young adults’ major conflict with forming close relationships, intimate love, and loving relationships with other people. According to the text “a person seeks to make commitments to others or suffers from isolation and self-absorption” (Martorell pg 14). For example, at this stage, they are physically & emotionally intimate, open, willing to associate, and able to make and keep commitments. My older sister is currently 25 years old and she’s been in an intimate relationship for 5 years now. She is very loved by her husband and her 4-year-old. My sister has lots of awesome friends so she has already developed intimacy. She is in a healthy relationship with her husband and has great support from her friends.

Stage 7: Generativity Vs. Stagnation

Erikson’s seventh stage of psychosocial development arises at ages 40 - 60 years old. In this stage, adults attempt to generate or look after things, frequently through parenting. In which contributes to the community, or to the world. The text stated that “a mature adult is concerned with establishing and guiding the next generation or else feels personal impoverishment” (Martorell pg 14). During this stage, middle-aged people are confident, generativity, and willing to invest in the next generation. I believe that my older sister is towards generativity because she is doing great raising her 4-year-old. My older sister is a teacher so she inspires her students to better and contribute to their community. With all of that, I don’t think she will resolve into stagnation since she is very caring for her students and family.

Stage 8: Integrity Vs. Despair

Erikson’s eighth stage of psychosocial development materializes at the age of 65 years & up. This stage begins at the age of 65 and sadly comes to an end at death. During this time at this stage, we view our achievements and can expand honesty if we see each other having a victorious existence. According to the text “an elderly person achieves acceptance of their own life and acceptance of death, or else despairs over inability to relive life” (Martorell pg. 14). Lastly during this stage every individual is proud of self and life, likes being an example to others, and accepts aging and death as part of the life cycle. In later life when my older sister is at this stage I believe she will resolve into integrity. If her life continues well she will have been a teacher for years and raised a bigger family. Once she hits aging she will most likely accept it and the afterlife.
