Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One, published on August 16, 2011, is an American novelist and screenwriter. In his past, he worked as a short-order cook, fish gutter, plasma donor, elitist video store clerk, and tech support drone. However, his first and foremost job is appreciating pop culture, and he eventually threw aside those other promising career paths to express his love of TV shows, movies, and other modern ways of living full time as a author and screenwriter. Cline wrote Ready Player One as an amalgamation of everything he loves and hates in our contemporary world.

With the world left in ruins, there is no where else to go to enjoy one's life except the OASIS. A massive multiplayer online simulation where anything is possible. Why live in the congested impoverished city streets when you can ski down the pyramids or climb a mountain with Batman? In Ready Player One, some children are forced to even go to school in the OASIS because it is too dangerous to get to school for some lower class children due to the immense crime rates and power outages.

The Antagonist in Ready Player One is the CEO of the time's wealthiest company in America, I0I Industries which manufactures the hardware for the OASIS. They are behind the construction of the consoles, and haptic gear one has to wear in order to access the OASIS. His name is Nolan Sorrento, and he will stop at nothing to control the OASIS, which in his eyes is the most valuable economic asset in the world.

After the creator of the OASIS, James Halliday, passed away, a video he had recorded before he died was broadcasted to every device in the world detailing how if someone finds all three of thekeys he apparently hid in the OASIS can unlock his "Easter Egg", which is a hidden message or image, or secret feature of a work, with which the winner of his contest could potentially inherit 100% of Halliday Games' stock, and control of the OASIS itself. However, there are other conflicts in my book. There is a character vs. self, character vs. society, and character vs. character conflict. The protagonists for most of the story is insecure about himself in the real world, so this is why he spends so much time in the OASIS. It is shown by how he describes reality, and how dreadful it is. He states that the worst part of the day is the part where he wakes up and has to spend 5-10 minutes during the morning that he showers and wakes up before returning to the OASIS.

Since the novel is surrounded by James Halliday's and finding the Easter Egg, people around the world delve deep into Halliday's personal life and interests to find clues and others soon begin to discover that he was obsessed with the 70's, 80's, and 90's and everything that comes with that time period. Halliday's favorite games were on old consoles that allow up to only two players to play at a time, and when the game is ready for a user to login with their controller, the screen displays the text: "Ready Player One."

Main character Wade Watts is a poor orphan that periodically lives with his Aunt who lives in the Stacks surrounding metropolitan Oklahoma City. The Stacks are mobile homes stacked up to 12 houses high where they can fit as many people in houses as possible. Wade names his OASIS character Parzival after Percival, the Arthurian knight famous for his quest for the Holy Grail, and dedicates his life to finding James Halliday's Easter egg. He is very good at videogames, and this gets in the way of I0I Industries' motives. Wade is interested in preserving the OASIS and creating a place where anyone can have fun instead of it being solely an escape.
