"Democracy doesn’t come from the top, it comes from the bottom”- Howard Zinn

The People Speak, which was built from Zinn’s book, "A People’s History", builds on the concept that greatness can be found within those who fought for social change. This change constantly reflected upon the democracy on which our country was founded upon. The film centers on the stories of human struggle in the formation of our liberties.
Integrating the images, letters, diaries, speeches, poems, and songs of everyday Americans allows an opportunity for students to understand the sentiment, emotion, and point of view behind the historical events. Textbooks provide a limited perspectives of historical events and people.

Students who are studying political changes, such as “who was and wasn’t allowed to vote” in the United States, may memorize or read a speech presented by Susan B. Anthony. This would allow the student to make connections to the individual and the hardships she faced. It would illustrate the true emotion of the historical context better than reading a chapter as a group and answering a handful of questions. Students can write speeches similar to those seen in the movie and read their speeches for the class as if they are that character.

During a unit on the Civil War, students can listen to John Brown's last speech and then decide if he was a hero or a terrorist. Students would form a group based on their beliefs. Student groups would work collaborative to build a case for debate.

Pairs of students could take people from the same time period and write a dialogue between the two people and then act it out for the class.

Insight into the historical acts that shaped democracy, is gained through the words spoken by those who experienced it.

The reading Sylvia Woods' experience as a young schoolgirl walking past the park and not being able to play was impactful. She refused to pledge the flag or sing the Star Spangled Banner because it she felt these acts contradicted the her reality, "if this land is free and the flag is mine, then how come I can't do like the white kids?"

To the claim that women could not have the same rights as a man because Christ wasn't woman, Sojourner Truth responded, "Where did your Christ come from?
